Remote Desktop aka MSTSC?

I have a friends computer who has windows xp home on it and is with orange that uses an orange livebox.

I want to remote into my computer at home that has windows xp pro and I am with virgin media behind a linksys router ( I have already port forwarded 3389 on both TCP and UDP ) and I know it works as I can remote into my home machine from work and else where.

I have port forwarded both ports on TCP and UDP on port 3389 for the orange livebox and I can not connect to my home machine, can someone please enlighten me as to why not.

I think its because virgin media must be a different domain and I need to enter the domain ip address or something along those lines, I am now using MSTSC version 6.0 for windows xp

Please help

Update:

any chance you can help me a bit further with how to do what you explained..

Well, the problem is not at your home location, or you wouldn't be able to remote in from work. The problem has to lie with your friend's setup. Let's assume you forwarded the ports correctly (since you did so at home).

The most likely problem is with his ISP. Many providers block port 3389 for home users, requiring them to pay a premium for "business" service to be able to use 3389. Check to see if his provider is blocking this port. If so, there's a workaround, but it's pretty tricky (you have to change your friend's default remote desktop port from 3389 to an unblocked port (such as 65001?, anything that's open). Then you have to configure your router to redirect all traffic coming in on that port to port 3389 on your home computer. Your router may/may not permit this function. You may have to change the default port at both ends to ensure no 3389 traffic is coming or going.
