Why was picking Kwame Brown #1 the worst draft pick ever?

I know Kwame sucks, but that year, EVERYONE told us that Kwame should be #1. ESPN, other sport shows, all of the so called experts all agreed that Kwame should be the # 1 pick because of his "potential." (most over-rated word in the NBA)

Now, because Kwame never reached even a fraction ofhis potential, they all act like they knew he's be a bust all along.

Update:

I know people throw Sam Bowie into this mix too, but again, at that time Sam Bowie was SUPPOSED to be a great player. And YES, Jordan turned out to be probably the best ever, but he wasn't even the 'can't miss' pick of that draft. Hakeem was.

He might be one of the worst choices for a number one overall pick in a draft but I don't think Kwame was the worst draft pick ever because he's still playing in the NBA and condributing a small amount. There are several players throughout history who are drafted and never play in an NBA game. Those to me are more questionable picks than Kwame was. The only reason he is considered such a draft bust is simply because he was taken number one. If he was picked at any other time he would be just a normal role player and people wouldn't have a problem with it because he still can have an impact during a game.

first of all, the worst draft pick ever is inarguably portland drafting sam bowie with the #2 pick in the 1984 draft, allowing the bulls to draft jordan.

But anyways, i agree that picking kwame was not as bad as people nowadays make it out to be. If you look at that year (2001), the best player in the draft was gilbert arenas, with tony parker as a close second, and neither of those guys were highly touted coming into the draft. This was one of the shallowest drafts in nba history, so you can't blame the wizards too much for drafting kwame.

I think the worst pick ever is Kwame Brown, but I don't really blame the Wizards for doing it. I think most of the big reaches in the NBA draft tend to work out somewhat well (The Suns were laughed at originally when they picked Steve Nash, for example). But the fact is, Kwame has been the least productive first pick ever, or at least is one of the top 3 (I can't think of anyone else that bad).

I am a huge Lakers fan, but this has to be one of the most inconsistent players in NBA history. In order to truly be successful, you need consistency. I understand that you can have a "bad day" or two, but the game play of Brown is simply unacceptable. Just when I jump of the couch thinking he is going to slam the ball into the rim, he misses the basket. I've never been able to figure out how Brown misses layups that are thought to be impossible to miss.Well he probably wasn't the worst (Candy Man comes to mind), but generally I agree. A lot of big men don't pan out, that is why I think Greg Oden might be a bust I would have taken Durant or Horford over him. It seems like every year, the number one pick's potential gets blown out of proportion and they say that they are the "best prospect at his position in the last 10 years/since so-and-so/etc." That is why the NBA draft is so rediculous it's funny. Thye choose foreign players just to choose foreign players sometimes. Most GMs really don't knwo what they are doing, you get the job by either being a former player, coach, or knowing the owner or president. It requires different skills than those positions that is why they are often bad at it.

Not only is Kwame a not-so-great player, but he's also WAY too temperamental. He clotheslined Boris Diaw last year and tried to strangle Gilbert Arenas once, when they were teammates. Kwame needs to see a psychologist. He always looks so depressed.

Kwame is capable of scoring 20 points a night, but he does it about 3 times a season. His typical stats are 6 points, 2 rebounds, 5 fouls, 5 turnovers.

    Typical Kwame Brown move:

Catch the ball...right...left...right...left...right...left...right...(shot clock at 3) LEFT...charges aimlessly towards the basket, ball flies out of his hands and misses the basket by 5 feet, hestitates, screams that he was fouled, and misses both free throws.

I think one reason why so many people focus so negatively on Kwame Brown is because Michael Jordan had a large role in choosing him.

I'm also a big Laker fan and I had high hopes for Kwami, but instead, I think he was actually relieved to be injured so he could just sit and watch. He must have known how the fans were disappointed in his play. I am happy they kept Luke and a big welcome back to Fisher! I think Fish and Farmar will be helping Kobe a lot. Looking forward to a new season and a better team!
