preparing for school during the summer?
what do you think a teacher should do in order to prepare for the school year?

Jeanette and SMichelle are right on the money. I probably work as hard (if not harder!) in the summer as I do during the school year. Get your hands on your TE's and become familiar with them. I use Post-It Flags to mark sections in almost everything.
I do exactly what they do:
write that first week's lesson plan
organize (reorganize, re-REorganize) the classroom for ease in finding things
if you've moved buildings, this is easier IF you can get your keys and get settled NOW rather than the week before school starts.
Put up bulletin boards as appropriate.
Get your class rosters as soon as possible and become familiar with your students' names. If you file everything for conferences, get the file system set up.
Make sure your "teacher wardrobe" is in working order.
Go to the "back to school sales" at the major stores. If you have early elementary, this is a great time to buy crayons for Christmas presents for all of the kids. (By then, they're going to NEED a new box of crayons!) Also, stock up on pencils, tissue, glue -- you know, the basic school supplies that you will run out of before the year runs out.
Get on the list of teacher discounts -- Office Depot has a wonderful teacher program, and they have a great Teacher Breakfast every year. I've bought one plan-book in 10 years because they give me a new one every year!!
Rest. That first week will be hectic!
(If you have children of your own, make sure you get THEIR supply list filled while you're at it!) :-)
Good luck!

Set up a lesson plan over the course of the year. Meaning a teacher should know what to teach and when to finish teaching each section on a certain deadline. The teacher should make notes in the textbooks and also answer the exercises if any in order to know exactly what to teach and assign for homework. If the teacher is an English teacher, of course he/she has to read the summer reading books. That is mostly it. A teacher should know everything about the grade level that subject teacher is teaching and be prepared with homework, getting to know your students' names, etc.

I am organizing my room better. Last year was my first year as a classroom teacher, and there were so many materials there that I wasn't able to keep track of things as I wanted. Because I have been through the year, I now know the flow. So, I am arranging things in the cabinets so that I can find things easily.

If you haven't already done so, get the scope and sequence for any subjects you will be teaching from your school. You can start reviewing it to get an idea of what will be done when.
If you haven't already done so, get the teacher edition of any textbooks you will be using from your school. You can start looking through those to get a feel for the book.
With the scope and sequence and the textbooks, you can start developing lesson plans, but it's very likely that you will make lesson plans with other teachers, so that may be something you need to put off (work smarter, not harder; you don't want to do something just to have to do it again). However, you can start planning your 1st few days of "get to know your students" activities.
Do some shopping. This is a good time to go to teacher supply stores. Sometimes they have big sales during the summer, so ask before you start buying. Look for things to decorate your room, materials you may use, etc. You could also go to office supply stores - they usually give teachers some sort of back-to-school bag with lots of goodies. Wait until Walmart puts their school supplies out to buy basics like pens and glue - they have REALLY good prices. I really like the spiral notebooks for 10 cents each. I usually buy around 50 of them. I can easily grab one to take to a staff meeting or parent teacher conference to take notes.
If you have access to your room, get in there and start decorating and arranging. I also do some deep cleaning because I'm a little more thorough than the custodial staff. I like to deep clean my dry erase boards, wipe down the desks, set up my overhead and other learning centers - everything I had to pack away for the custodial staff to clean the carpets and stuff. Hang up posters, calendar, etc. You can also organize some - arrange your desk, go through your file cabinets, start bringing your personal items to the school.
You could type up your welcome back letter to go home with students to parents. You could work on your discipline plan - develop it, put it on posters, type it up to go home with students (this may also be something you need to wait on because you may have a campus-wide one). You could develop your classroom procedures and type those up to hand out to students.
Work on your wardrobe. Anything need to be dry-cleaned, repaired, polished, etc. Go through your clothes and throw out anything that no longer fits or you will no longer wear. Purchase anything new you might need. You might even want to get several outfits ready for the first few days or week. Check pantyhose and socks for holes. You know, that kind of stuff.
Good luck - I'll be getting geared up here in a few weeks myself. I have a newborn that I'll be trying to get on a schedule before the school year begins.

I have taught for a while and the best thing you can do for youraelf is to rest up...
now, if you are new to teaching...get your scope an dsequence and outline by six weeks the objectives you will want to cover.
Maybe do your 1st three week lesson plans and copies...
Decorate your room, if they will give u access to it.
