Anyone own a 1990 Ford Mustang GT, I need a new rack an pinion?
Steering is weird and I was told I probably need a new rack and pinion, what is that and who installs them for how much?
What I mean by steering weird is that it sticks when you turn it to the left and right while driving, it is very difficult to turn, even though it has power steering but it feels like manual. It has enough power steering fluid and yes I need new tires.

what do you mean steering is weird? does it pull? are the tie rod ends loose? are tires worn out? these and other things need to be diagnosed before doing a steering rack a steering rack usually does not go bad unless it is damaged by something or is very contaminated or leaks from the bellows boots A new rack will run between 3and4hundred labor is 2 hours plus an alignment I would try a good independent shop then a dealer then an alignment shop just get a few honest opinions it probably just need an alignment and maybe a bearing pack and new tires although without seeing it I'm of course just guessing.BTW the steering rack is part of the steering gear (1 piece unit and is coupled to your short shaft) which is coupled to your steering column which allows you to steer!!!then more then likely your worm gear is binding so yeah you will need a new steering rack =( sorry.but i would have the system tested with a power steering analyzer to verify if the pump is bad or the rack or both because the pump is like 70 bucks plus 2hours labor opposed to the rack of being 300.00 and 2.5 hours labor plus alignment costs so It needs to be diagnosed it could just have a bad pump.

the rack and pinion is the device that steers your car it is connect to the steering wheel shaft under the car.www.brothersperformance.com has 1980-1993 rack and pinions for 249.99 (no old core required) which means you dont need to give them your old parts. hope this helps.

Yes, about $300 for parts, 2 hours labor, they are in the front between the wheels. Have a front end shop check it out first, they are the real experts. In California that job would run $450 to $500.

sounds like to me you also need to replace your power steering pump also , when the rack goes bad it will fill the power steering pump up with metal
