Why is there such a heated debate on wearing or not wearing a helmet?

The general question refers to rude and derogitory answers as to why others can't see and conform to the answerers views. The underlying question is more to justification as to why ALL should conform. Given the pros and cons. And not just the superficial like noise, vision and weight, but medical as to neck injury, brain swelling which they don't prevent, hyperentention of the neck and the fact that they are tested for effectiveness at only 13 mph.

Are they of benefit? Without a doubt. But doesn't it come down to indiviual accidents? Whether you talk to the quadripaligent who received a broken neck from a frontal impact or the rider who slid into the curb or sharp object and spit his helmet open insted of his skull?

OK as you can tell I can go on and on. But I do genuinly whan to know the justifcation for feeling all should conform to one view or the other. And I will read and respect all honest views and replies.

I believe its due to the instinct for domination that humans & other pack animals have. the people that want all others to do as they say dont really have compassion for or care about those of us who want indivivual freedom, it just gives them satisfaction to see we have to do as they wish at no cost or risk to themselves. they are just a more base & primitive form of intellect. for example most of the people in favor of helmet laws dont ride & wouldnt speak to us if we met in a social situation. the slogan live free or die is taken quite literally by some of us. leave us alone or suffer the consequences

I live in Florida and we don't have a helmet law for those carrying 10 thousand in Insurance Medical coverage ,Here it is probably half and half that wear a Helmet are not ,I choose not to wear a Helmet because I cant never find one that fits properly are it makes me feel like a Cone-head , When I die are if I become in a vegetable state I want it to be because I was doing what I love to do the most and that is enjoying the breeze in my hair ,Whoever came up with the motto "Let those who ride decide " said it best and it should stand in every State /Peace

When you ride your bike to scope out the chicks, they just see a dude with a helmet on looking at them. Without a helmet, they can "check out the goods" much better. You also will have to bring a spare with you everywhere you go if you are lucky as to give em a ride. I feel its our right to not wear one but the laws here in California say we must. I work in EMS and I respond to motorcycle accidents. Some of them are lucky they did wear a helmet but it doesnt offer 100% protection from head, or spinal injuries, including hyper extension/flexing of the neck. It should be the law for young motorcycling idiot squids to wear helmets. You know who you are!

I don't know I thought it just looks cool to have a helmet, otherwise you're just someone with a car.... j/k I've laid my bike down four times, and those four times with the SAME helmet, it's a little cracked but just the outer plastic. The fastest was probably like 25-30mph and I usually fell on my side so my arm and then shoulder and then head came down in that order lol. MotoGP racers wreck at 200mph and their helmet saves them at that speed so it's as freaking obvious as night and day, just watch World Superbike or MotoGP racing and watch a wreck, they usually have a few per race and it doesn't phase anyone of them. I always have full leathers, boots, helmet, gloves, etc.

when I was growing up we didnt have to wear helmets to ride a bicycle, skateboard, skates, . we rode in the back of p/u trucks sitting on the fender, nobody fell out because my parents were safe drivers and I didnt stand up going down the road. we played with bb guns and shot targets not each other. I went hunting with no safety course other than what my dad taught me and didnt kill anyything but an animal we later ate. I ride and drive like I have good sense and drive defensivly so I hope this helps everyone understand why I dont need a nannny govt telling me whats best for me.

My pals and that i holiday in any charity holiday we are able to. We positioned on helmets and each now and then even chaps and jackets. driving in a set of strangers or noobs can oftentimes be as risky or greater suitable than purely driving on my own. somebody unfamiliar with group rides would line up incorrectly or ignore approximately spacing out. aim fixation? constantly go searching while choosing a set to holiday in and with. There are 4 motorcycles in our group. We enable everyone to holiday a rapid whilst and watch them. blunders they make will decide for if we mount up and pass away before them on the subsequent stretch. constantly positioned on a helmet and as a lot protection as available. it somewhat is presently ninety 9 ranges right here for the duration of the day and final week we had warmth indexes of 108. I nonetheless holiday on those days, purely carry some thing to drink and make time-honored stops to cool down and replentish fluids. It relatively does not count if the water is chilly as long because it somewhat is nearly cool. Dehydration on a rdie is extremely rapid and you do not are attentive to it somewhat is occurring till it occurs. i attempt to provide up each and every 50 miles or so which you will possibly drink. On an entire face helmet it must be better to get rid of the shelter and positioned on shatter resistant colorations (protection glasses) rather. I positioned on a three/4 helmet and not using a shelter, purely protection glasses. Tinted for day and sparkling for night.

It's a choice issue,as statistics cannot prove the case one way or the other...states which repeal helmet laws may have increase in fatalities, but not when increased numbers of bikes on the road are considered...plus the mass x velocity=force argument...those who want laws repealed have no issue with those who want to voluntarily wear a helmet...

well good quality helmets are definately for the safety but if you buy a good quality solid helmet, that would surely have weight and due to that weight on your head all the time, you might have to suffer neck problems like cervical..

I am now totally against of helmet as i feel pain in my neck almost every time. doctor said its cervical and its a long lasting pain and will remain with me for my entire.

Thats all because of stupid very good quality expensive helmet... :-(

I live in California. Riding without a helmet will result in getting pulled over by the California Highway Patrol, getting a lecture, not being allowed to ride off on your bike 'til you get a helmet (imagine calling your mom to bring you your helmet, how embarrassing), and getting a ticket which you have to pay $$$.

No debate here. Preserve nature, always wear your helmet.
