Overweight dog food recommendations for standard size dachshund?

As we live in Las Vegas the heat is too much and he can't get the exercise he needs. I've put him on a treadmill and he wasn't crazy about that idea; until the temps drop his doggie walking outings are pretty much on hold. He porks up in the summer and sheds weight in the cooler months because he's out running around. He's not a big eater but he does love his treats and chewies.

My vet said to get a dog food that helps speed up his metabolism instead of a diet food that maintains his weight. He recommended Purina OM and Science Diet R/D....anyone have any experience with either of these or any other brands for doggie diets? He needs to lose at minimum 5 lbs, 10 at the most.

I have a miniature dachshund, and he has a weight problem that has recently been made worse by a broken leg. He had to be crated since his injury until he healed, and it was very important that he not gain weight, and he still needed to lose. We tried the Purina OM, but he didn't like it. The Science Diet R/D was great. He liked the taste, and apparently his metabolism was given a boost because he has lost a half pound in three weeks with very little exercise. Give it a try.

firstly get off the Science Diet - this food is highly over priced for its quality - they paid for vet endorsment - vets commonly recieve little or NO training on food brands and ingredients and if you check Science Diet ingredient list you will find some very bad ingredients... if your vet sells Science Diet then of course they are going to reccomend it.... I am going to assume you are in the USA.. if so going back to NUTRO may be the correct solution but a slightly reduced amount.. if you are in Canada.. try NUTRAM you need to raise the cat food so the dog cannot get it. The dog likes it better becasue cat food has more meat in it.. (since cats are true carnivours) remember when following feeding guidlines - go with the weight the dog SHOULD be rather than the weight the dog actually is... like people - excercise will help!

I'd think you'd have better results going with a quality meat-based dog food rather than grain-based. Both of the foods you mentioned are grain-based. Maybe something like Timberwolf, Wellness, or Natural Balance would be a better choice. Vets get paid for recommending certain foods. That's why so many vets' offices are full of Science Diet. There are better options out there.

You do not need weight control food, all you need to do is buy a good quality dog food with out fillers such as Tiberwolf Organics, California Naturals, Wellness, Canidae and Solid Golid. You also need to cut down on the amount of treats, chewies and the amount you feed your dog. Try walking your dog late at night or early in the morning, just like humans, dogs need exercise regardless of temperature to maintain or lose weight.

if your vet recommended something then that might be the best thing to go with since your vet knows your pet and it's breed better than most others.

Hills science plan R/D, ask your vet for it, or where you can get it, i used to be a canine weight watcher vet nurse, and believe me.....it really works,
