Haggling price with car dealer?
I am looking to buy a 2004-2006 Dodge ram 2500 quad cab 4X4 Diesel Pickup. prices for these trucks are around $29000 for the options and mileage I want. what is a good price to offer the dealer to start haggling without them laughing at me?

Go to Kelly Blue Book ( I think it's KellyBlueBook.com) and put in all the info on what you want (as if you were getting ready to sell one). Do it a couple of ways: trade in value (from excellent to poor condition - I think you'll have 3 or 4 prices), retail value for the same conditions, and there's one more - I think it's a value to sell it on your own.
Now I know you aren't selling, you're buying - but this will give you an idea of what they are going for on the open market all around the country - not just in your area. I'd offer the dealership the low - middle TRADE IN value first - that's a good starting point - they almost always give the person trading-in the lowest trade in value they can get away with, so even if you get it for that price, they'll still make money.
The more vehicles (particularly trucks) they have on the lot - the less they will be willing to take.
BTW - let them laugh - this is a tactic they use to get the upper hand - if they can make you feel inferior, they are more likely able to get you to pay more. Don't let 'em do that.
Good luck - happy trucking!

Your best tool is knowledge. An educated consumer is the best defense against unscrupulous sales tactics. Do your research, know the product, know how much it costs and how much you are willing to pay. Deal on PRICE only. Never negotiate on monthly payments and never offer cash down or a trade in. Make them negotiate the PRICE OF THE CAR and leave all the other BS off to the side. Get pre-approved for a loan by an independent lender, your personal Banker or a Credit Union. Don't allow them to introduce financing into the equation. Again, sticking to the price of the product. If you know how much you are pre-approved for on your loan, you already know what your payment will be based on the loan amount, you know everything up front except the price of the vehicle.

sounds to me like you have been shopping around for these trucks..........ok ..so you know that diesel trucks are getting top dollar these days right? if the truck has the equiptment that you want, the mileage you want, and is in the contition that you want...why would you look any farther?? you will waste more gas in a month driving around to other lots "just looking" ........the dealer has a job to do! he does have to make money!....dont beat him up too bad ...if you do you might not get that perfect truck you want! good luck!

If they ask $29,000 (which will be more because of tax, license, etc.) offer them $24,000 "out the door," which means including everything. Then settle on the best you can get.
The main thing is never discuss monthly payments. They can sell you anything with very low payments by just financing it for a longer term.
They'll ask you how much you want to pay a month. You tell them you want to settle the price of the truck first and then you'll decide if you want to pay cash or finance.
Even if you know you are going to finance, do not talk about trade in, down payment, etc, until you settle the price.

As your talking used, I would look to the private market 1st, dealers last.
You are talking about the most popular truck in America, so they wont give it away, start around 22000

Go to Kelly Blue Book and get the fair price blue book and show them your willing to start there. Don't tell them if you have a triad in if you do until after you have gotten your best price, compare other trucks at other dealerships as well before you start you bargain. Don't for get you have lemon law rights. You can get the book Identifying a Lemon at lemonprotection.com free. I read it and it really helped me with my car in preparing to get help. Good Luck and GOD Bless
