Music/Physics major?

I'm having trouble deciding where I want to go to college, mostly because I don't know much about it. I'm really into weird physics (Quantum physics and the like), but I also love music, so I suppose my question is if you can double major in theoretical physics and performing arts/music, and if so, what a good college to so so at is.

From a technical perspective, yes, you can double major in anything you want. From a practical standpoint, music performance and anything else will likely generate some difficulties for you.

I went to college on art scholarships, but ended-up getting bored with it. At first, I tried to pick up a double major with biology as my second, but problems ensued. My art profs were less than happy with the concept, and spent a lot of time comparing me to my classmates who could spend more time on their projects than I could. I tried to make the argument that I should be evaluated on the result, not the amount of time that went into creating the result, but that only really held water with one professor. The rest started to pick me apart. Were they right...? Maybe. If I look back now (20 years almost), I'd say that they were right sometimes, and not on other occasions.

Today, I've earned my Ph.D. in biology, have published numerous papers in my field. I dropped my art major after becoming frustrated with the faculty in the department. The bio department faculty were amazingly supportive, and encouraged my artistic side even, but I couldn't take what I felt was unfair treatment. Today, I do all of my own illustrations and have scored a number of covers in scientific journals in part based on my science, and I believe in part because I do above average cover mock-ups. But now it's been awhile since I've done any significant art outside of my scientific context. ...just lack of time, really, since in the sciences your peers spend an average of 60 hours each week in the lab.

So my point is that yes... you can do it. But in the end, you're asking to work in careers that only employ the top 1% of the people who wanted those jobs. So in order to be successful in the career, you'll very likely have to choose. ...but not while you're in college, so keep it up if you want to, and I hope your experience is better than mine was. Good luck!

You can indeed double major in any two fields. I have a Bachelor's of Arts in Philosophy and a Bachelor's of Science in Communication (as well as a minor in Chemistry); however, it often means being in school longer (since classes in one don't overlap others). If two areas overlap it makes things easier (e.g., my best friend has a Political Science degree and a History degree).

I would suggest that you do not declare a major until you have resolved your interests. You should better ask, which of the two you would like to devote your life to. You can always make the other a hobby. I would suggest that you find the best school that will accept you, take your general ed requirements, and let the two areas compete with each other for your attention. Just remember, you are not solely the degree you seek--Einstein himself was a patent clerk doing theoretical physics as a hobby. Remember taking a degree in one thing does not keep you from having a hobby in the other.

P.S.--If you want a quality intro book on theoretical physics check out one of these two:

you can double major in anything...

because the fields are unrelated, you may wish to consider a double degree program instead of double majoring.

in order to pick the best school, you need to determine which is more important or which you hope to persue as a career. pick a school based on that major.

most schools offer both music and physics as majors. just make sure that the school you choose has theoretical physics as an option for focus.

    good luck!
