  • Calculus question (Surprisingly, I'm not asking for homework answers)?

    When finding the slope of a tangent line where the function is something like 1/x, my calculus book has a proof, and I don't understand how to go from one step to the other.

    limit as h->0 ((1/a+h)-(1/a))/h

    = limit as h->0 (1/h) * (a-(a+h))/a(a+h)

    Care to explain?

  • Trying to think of a book about a carrier pigeon; any help?

    I remember it took place in Tibet, the pigeon was a carrier pigeon in a world war, and the book had "gay" in the title. It was something like "Gaywing" or "Gayhawk".

    Thanks for any help!

  • What does "B." followed by a number mean in regards to classical music?

    I know that "Op." is the opus number, but I noticed in some of the music I downloaded recently that many of the pieces have "B." followed by a number. All of the pieces have this, but many lack an opus number. Have any idea what this means?

  • Help with being a music major?

    Alright, so I recently decided I would like to chase my dream and major in music in college. Now, what I'd like to do is just go and get my Ph.D and then teach at a university. I suppose my questions are this:

    1. How difficult is it to get a teaching job if you're equipped with a Ph.D? I know it probably depends a lot on other things, but in general?

    2. Is it normal/Would I be able to go strait from BA to MA to PhD, or would I have to do things in between?

    3. What are some good music colleges? Preferably in the Northeast US (I'm looking at Carnegie Mellon because I love the school to death, but it's expensive as hell).

    4. How risky is majoring in music?

    Thanks for any help.

  • Factoring out imaginary numbers?

    Ok, so I understand this:

    x^2 + 4 = 0

    x^2 = -4

    x = (plus or minus) sqrt(-4)

    x = (plus or minus) 2i

    So, the question I'm having problems with is this:

    x^2 + 2x +5 = 0

    x^2 = -2x - 5

    x = (plus or minus) sqrt(-2x-5)

    Does it come out to this?:

    x= sqrt(2x+t5), or x= sqrt(2x-5), or neither?

    Thanks for any help.

  • I'm looking for a rapper?

    I've been interested in making beats for a while, but I sure as hell can't rap. In looking at Yahoo Answers, there seemed to be quite a few people looking for beats (and willing to pay). I don't want money, just someone looking for beats. This isn't any kind of serious thing, trying to get signed or anything, just for fun. Lemme know. You can e-mail me at Cameron5@aol.com, but I only check it so often. AIM would be best (my screen name is cameron5).

  • Traveling to Russia?

    Me and a few friends are interested in traveling to Russia as a senior trip (summer of 2010). Unfortunately, we're all quite inexperienced when it comes to international travel. I'm picturing horror stories (getting separated, losing luggage, etc.) Any help is appreciated, preferably prices, links, descriptions, what to know, dos and don'ts, etc. I'll pick answers based on quality, not speed, for those of you who care about that sort of thing.

  • Do I have to learn the cylrillic alphabet to use rosetta stone russian?

    I recently got the rosetta stone program for Russian, and was quite excited to use it. Me and my fans think Russia is awesome, and wanted to learn some Russian and take a trip there. Unfortunately, it seems that you have to be quite fluent in the Cyrillic alphabet to use the program. I was wondering if I am right in this, and if so, if anyone can give me any pointers in learning the cyrillic alphabet/Russian in general.

    спасибо! (Thank you)

  • Ingrown hair?

    I have an ingrown hair on my crotch. Not the kind where it comes out and then goes back in, but never came out in the first place. What do I do? Leave it alone? Someone said to pop it like a pimple, but that sounds like a bad idea, not to mention painful as hell.

  • What percentage of the Dead Sea Scrolls have been found?

    My friend was telling me that they found some more of the dead sea scrolls recently, and that they found that modern translations more or less accurate. Is this true? And how many scrolls do we think there are? Have we found all of them? Google told me more or less the same thing over and over.

    Thanks for any help.

  • Would it be plausible to be a physics major and a music/theology minor?

    I don't know what the rules are with having minors, but I know it's hard to double major in things which are very different. Also, when I say plausible, I mean realistically. I'm sure it's possible to do it, but if it requires 26 hours of homework a night, then that's obviously too much.

    Any help is appreciated. Also, any college suggestions?

  • College v. Band?

    Well, I'm in a band, and I really enjoy playing (I play guitar/bass about 1-3 hours a day. Before you say it, I have a life, but I love guitar), but I figured it was just a hobby/way to pick up chicks. The other day at practice, though, our guitarist started talking about getting signed/touring. I thought he was just talking hypothetically, but he was serious. unfortunately, he's getting out of college two years before the rest of us are, and he doesn't want to wait for us to graduate.

    From what I understand, it's pretty hard to get signed and whatnot, but we really do have a good setup - our guitarist is going to college to be an audio engineer, and everyone in the band is good friends with the owner of a (and pretty much the only) venue for local bands to play at.

    My plans, however, were to graduate and get a job and maybe play in a band on the side. I suppose what I'm asking is what would you do, because if I ask what to do, I have a feeling I'm going to get all "Do what you want".

  • Music/Physics major?

    I'm having trouble deciding where I want to go to college, mostly because I don't know much about it. I'm really into weird physics (Quantum physics and the like), but I also love music, so I suppose my question is if you can double major in theoretical physics and performing arts/music, and if so, what a good college to so so at is.

  • Who can name the bigger number? (Math Stuff)?

    I read some thing a while ago on "Who can name the bigger number". It basically said that it was whoever had the deeper paradigm. The progression is Exponentials, the Ackermann Sequence, Busy Beaver Numbers/Turing Numbers, and then the infinitely repeating Busy Beaver Sequence (By Rado). I was wondering if a deeper paradigm has been found?

  • Any hope towards a new Self album?

    There's this obscure band called Self, and I like them quite a bit, but thier latest album is in legal limbo. The fan site is very rarely updated, and I was wondering if anyone had any news about the new album, them, or anything else. For all I know, they're dead.

  • My band is going to try and play a ska version of "Hey Ya" by Outkast. Good or bad idea?

    The bassline is just a few notes from the major scale of each note played. Guitar is... ska. You know. The keyboard part is played by the horns, and the whole thing is sped up substancially. Do you think this is a retarded idea? (Me and my band members like the idea, but we've gotten very varied responces from others).

    Is it just that is causes the moisture/other liquids on your skin to evaporate faster? If so, how?

  • Land of No Quarter - Ring any Bells?

    I remember one of my teachers a few years ago talking about a place around the middle east called something in arabic (or some other language) that translated to the land of no quarter. It was called this because absolutely no one lived there because it was so inhospitable. However, I can not for the life of me remember what it was called or where it was. Google turned up no results, which is kind of scary. Thanks for any help you can give me.
