Was attacked by a hacker. What does the number in brackets mean after his IP 124.157.218.200(24500)?

This guy I think is in Thailand (got 7 hits on Google for his IP address without the brackets) and found a defunct e-mail address of nat@mail.com.

His 3 hack attempts were successfully rejected but I don't know what the number in brackets after the IP address might indicate. I found the first two (fell asleep before his 3rd attempt), both immediately after the end of his IP. Thus:

124.157.218.200(24500)

and,

124.157.218.200(12934)

Are they part of his IP? Or does my security software generate them? Any ideas (preferably factual rather than guesses please).

Thanks folks.

Source port number would be my answer.

Now, as for you. The correct term for these kids is 'cracker' not hacker.

Make sure you get a firewall installed that is only open to the usual ports (80 & 8080 for browsing, 20 & 21 for FTP, etc) and closed to all others. If you want to track down the villains try a freeware program called SamSpade which will identify the source IP's home country & ISP. This could be a botnet attack and it just happened to come from that country at that time.

That is the port that the attack was trying to access on your computer. the default port for a the web (http) is port 80.

What this means is he\she is trying to use ports that are not commonly accessed or used.

If you do not have a firewall program other than Windows firewall you need one. Comodo or Zone Alarm.

Contact your ISP thay may be able to block his IP range.

Number in bracket means a server port that he used during its attacks. Everybody has own port on server, given by internet provider. Your security software does not generate them.

usually this number represents the network port he hacked you from. so if i were you i would block that port using a firewall software or something.

    ^Idiots.

Those numbers are just the ports that the data was sent to.

You are not likely in any danger, if he was any good, he would have gone right through your firewall without being picked up.
