What to do when I can't stand my job any more and think I'll go crazy with boredom if I retire?

I am a 55 year old female with no close relatives or friends. Three months ago I became eligible for retirement from my job. I just don't seem to have any more enthusiasm for it and I'm starting to feel frustrated and angry all the time when at work. On the flip side, I easily become bored when away from work. It boils down to - I go to work to get away from home and I go home to get away from work. I'm so now I'm in a quandary about my life path right now. No matter what I do, I feel dissatisfied. Any advice? Thanks!

Find something to do outside work, like volunteer. If you find something fulfilling to do in your spare time, work may be more enjoyable. You could also travel a bit on the weekends just to get away because you may be stressed. Just small things help. The important thing is to find an activity away from work you like to do so that you aren't bored or stressed out from work.

If you can volunteer somewhere that would be great. Now is the time to finally do all those things you have been wanting to do, but just didnt have the time before. You might also consider therapy to help you with the whole no close friends issue. Getting bored easily can sometimes be a defense mechanism as to how you really feel. I would say start on some therapy, volunteer somewhere, take a trip and get out of that job. Or if you still want the extra cash get another job. But I would work on building a better support system so you can have people to hang out with in retirement.

If you have strong beliefs, you can always volunteer somewhere that falls under that category. For instance, if you have a heart for the sick you can volunteer at a hospital or hospice. You can also find a part-time job at a small shop/business to work for a while and find a "seniors" group in town. Look at it as a time to travel, to do things you have wanted to do for quite a while, read something you've always wanted to read, etc.

It's not so bad once you get yourself into a roll and into programs that interest you. My grandparents are the most holy people I know lol, a lot of their time is spent counseling couples, helping the people at church, running small bible studies, etc. That's what they like to do. Grandma also spends a lot of time in the garden and grandpa still runs a side business from the house fixing televisions.
