can anyone work this out 10 pts to the first correct answer?

3 brothers pool thier money together to buy a £30 game. After they bought the game the manager informed the shop clerk who sold it to them that the price of the game had gone down to £26. So the clerk thinks that he cant give the boys £4 because its unfair so he keeps a pound for himself and gives them a pound each. The boys spent £9 each in total. 9x3=27 plus the £3 they got back from the clerk is £30 plus the £1 the clerk kept = £31. The game was only £30 to begin with so where did the extra pound come from?

    they paid a net of 27=9x3 pounds only.26 pounds for the game and 1 pound stayed with the clerk.No confusion. they paid 30pounds ,to begin with

    30=26+1+3.

    If the game cost £26, the boys would have spent £8 2/3 pounds each, and received £3 pounds back, which would have added up to £29, and since the clerk kept a £, that would add up to £30, not £31. It's meant to trick you.

    I'm assuming each boy had 10 pounds to buy the game. So 30 pounds was given for the game. When they found out the game was only 26 pounds , 4 pounds was separated so that 1 pound was given to each boy and 1 pound to the clerk. yes, the boys ended up spending 9 pounds each making it 27 pounds spent. but the game was only 26 pounds . so the clerk kept that pound.

    26 pounds was paid for the game. the boys were left with 3 pounds. and the clerk had 1 pound.

    26 + 1 + 3 = 30

    Hi,

    The boys only spent £27 total when you realize they paid £26 for a game plus the£1 the crooked clerk stole. Over and above that, there was only the other £3 that the clerk returned to the boys. So the "extra" £1 is really a misdirection, implying a £27 charge for the game.

    I hope that helps!! :-)

    There is no extra pound

    It's just a play on words - and an old one at that

    The brothers paid 27 pound for a 26 pound game. The clerk keeps the extra pound

    by giving them a pound back each the boys believe the game was 27 each, where it was only 26. the extra pound the shop clerk keeps, and no one is any wiser.

    the supposed extra pound is the difference between the cost of the game £26 and the price they paid £ 27

    they only got £3 change instead of four so the sums add up fine

    It cost 26 but they paid 27. They paid him a pound too much, there wasn't 31 only 30

    They did not spent £9 each to begin with they spent £8.66 each. multiply that by 3=£25.999 rounded to £26. plus £1 ach = £29 plus pound in shop managers pocket =£30
