If it is a new cartridge you just replaced, it may be a defective cartridge. Most new ink cartridges have chips in them that help the printer identify them as valid cartridges. If that chip is improperly programmed or damaged, the printer will not recognize the cartridge. This can also happen in a cartridge that you were using in the printer and it suddenly goes bad. Replace the cartridge and it should take care of the error. I should add that I agree with the answer that said to try cleaning the brass contacts on the cartridge, this can cause problems as well, and should always be the first thing you try.

Take the cartridge out, look on the back of it, and you will see a printed circuit, carefully wipe it with a soft cloth. Then put it back in, if that doesn't work it may be too old.
Then you will have to buy a new one.

what is the model number of the printer and the cartridge number. you probably have the wrong cartridge.
The printer is reading the cartirdge well enough to give you an error, it is most likely installed correctly, however it may very well be the wrong cartirdge.
