I am an hourly employee. My boss asked me to work late without pay. Is that illegal? What should I do?

I have stayed late other times to get everything finished, but he never specifically asked me to before. I have never been paid extra for it. When I asked if I could add the extra time to my time sheet, he said "no, do the extra work during lunch", which I also don't get paid for.

that is illegal and he should be aware of that. what company are you working for and what is his name? I WILL REPORT HIM FOR YOU INSTEAD!

Yes, that is illegal. Go to the Labor Board in your local area and report it. In all actuality, you are only required to work 8 hrs. a day and no more that 40 hrs. a week. Anything over that is suppose to be overtime. You are being taken advantage of by your boss, and the sooner you take care of this matter, the better off you will be.

Illegal and down right rude on your boss's side. If asked again be nice state your know I would love too but my wife, mother, father, whatever has made plans for us and it wouldn't be right to let them down. After 30 years of working I had my share of working overtime without the overtime. After a few years of it I decided overtime without pay was for the birds. I used every excuse from doctors appt to my sister having surgery to my mother isn't feeling too well and dad wants us all to come over.U can't be fired for it but they can and probably will mention it onyour yearly review andjust shrug and state sorry I am intitled to have life outside of work.

    That is illegal.

1 you must have breaks and lunch

    2. If you are hourly he must pay you to stay late. If he doesn't he is breaking the law.

Tell him you have plans and can't stay late unless he is going to compensate you for your time. He is taking advantage of you. DON'T work during your lunch.

That is against OSHA regulations www.osha.gov. Check them out, they make you take the break and make sure that you get paid what you deserve. That's illegal and the employer can get into serious trouble. I would start looking for another job if i were you and give 2 week notice and leave.

    good luck

You DO NOT have to work anywhere and not get paid. (if in the USA)

Perhaps if you stand up for yourself you will see a change... tell the boss how you feel and start looking for a better job.

    Good luck !! : )

We here in america have what are called workers rights and him making you do extra work during lunch is illigal and against your rights and also it is illigal to force you to do work after hours without pay you are payed to do work by the hour not by the amound of work done .

Keep this job for now, but keep your eye open for something better. It's much easier to take on a fresh new boss than it is to try to change the old one.

Stand up for your rights - NO PAY, NO WORK. If you let your boss get away with this then it'll never stop and he'll do it to other people.

the best thing you can do is keep track of your hours and at the end of a month report it to the labor board.
