Is it illegal to sell concert tickets for a profit?

I have two concert tickets for a sold out show that I am being offered a lot of $ for. Can I get in trouble if I sell them? What could happen to me? I live in New York state.

Recent legislation appears to now allow ticket scalping in New York.

Technically any time you sell a ticket for a profit it is considered scalping and is illegal. If you know the person you are selling to and they are not an undercover police officer then there will be no issue. The people they are really after is the guy selling them in front of the arena for more than the entrance cost.

Ticket scalping SHOULD be illegal, in my opinion! I don't know how many times I have missed work to go buy tickets and they're sold out in minutes, many of them to scalpers who live 500 miles away (who you know didn't buy them to go to the show) so they can sell them online! I HATE that! I think the price of each ticket should be printed on the ticket and you should be arrested for extortion if you try to sell it for more than face value!

Generally, that's called scalping and the laws on that vary by state.
