A modern hijab poem?

A MODERN HIJAB POEM

What do you see when you look at me

Do you see someone limited, or someone free

All some people can do is just look and stare

Simply because they can't see my hair

Others think I am controlled and uneducated

They think that I am limited and un-liberated

They are so thankful that they are not me

Because they would like to remain 'free'

Well free isn't exactly the word I would've used

Describing women who are cheated on and abused

They think that I do not have opinions or voice

They think that being hooded isn't my choice

They think that the hood makes me look caged

That my husband or dad are totally outraged

All they can do is look at me in fear

And in my eye there is a tear

Not because I have been stared at or made fun of

But because people are ignoring the One up above

On the day of judgment they will be the fools

Because they were too ashamed to play by their own rules

Maybe the guys won't think I am a cutie

But at least I am filled with more inner beauty

See I have declined from being a guy's toy

Because I won't let myself be controlled by a boy

Real men are able to appreciate my mind

And aren't busy looking at my behind

Hooded girls are the ones really helping the Muslim cause

The role that we play definitely deserves applause

I will be recognized because I am smart and bright

And because some people are inspired by my sight

The smart ones are attracted by my tranquility

In the back of their mind they wish they were me

We have the strength to do what we think is right

Even if it means putting up a life long fight

You see we are not controlled by a mini skirt and tight shirt

We are given only respect, and never treated like dirt

So you see, we are the ones that are free and liberated

We are not the ones that are sexually terrorized and violated

We are the ones that are free and pure

We're free of STD's that have no cure

So when people ask you how you feel about the hood

Just sum it up by saying, 'Baby its all good'

What do you think?

Salam, cute poem..To UZ Or UC whatever your ID is.. Do you know that the rate of STD's and AIDS is less in Islamic communities compared to others in the world?

As a Muslim women I am not oppressed... My husband is a great man who treats me as if I am on a pedestal...he does not cheat nor does he do drugs or drink. I do not have to worry about being beat.. I do not worry about his brothers or cousins being sexually inappropriate.

I think if you want to wear an overcoat in 112 degree weather, that's your choice. Enjoy.

To equate the wearing of anything other than a hijab with being "being a guy's toy", "sexually terrorized and violated", impure, or infected with STDs is ridiculous.

To believe that wearing clothing that allows ones hair and/or face to be seen or that doesn't completely hide the beauty of the form that God gave you will so inflame men by merely being in your presence as to drive them to sin is, at best, pious and arrogant and borders on the absurd.

As for not being oppressed. Here is a recent news article regarding stepped up police action in Iraq over women in unislamic dress.

I ask, where is the choice? Is not the absence of such a choice the very definition of oppression?

you call it a poem, i call it a rant. Free isn't the word i will use to describe a woman tied up in a gown. but that's just me. It's just like telling me that some humans choose to crawl into a cage and lock themselves up and that frees them from rape and sexual abuse and cheating. Ok great.

One last comment, why do opponents of the hijab compare it with STDs, rape, assault etc? They are not mutually exclusive. People wearing the hijab have the same freq of STDs, rape etc, the difference is the communities they live in do not encourage disclosure infact, they could get punished for reporting it because the assumption is that they got raped because they weren't modest.

Frankly, i am tired of people defending the hijab. You don't see me defending my right to dress like i want to despite the fact that it gets condemned by the different religious groups. You know why? It's because i don't care what anyone else thinks. If you are fine with wearing the hijab, good for you but i am tired of hearing about it. Just wear it and go about your day

Jen3365: You don't worry about being assaulted/raped etc because you have decent people around you not because you are islamic. And yes, alot of disease statistics are inaccurate among islamic nations because accurate reporting is almost impossible. I don't agree with your assertion that STDs are low in islamic countries or that men cheat less or that rape is less encountered. Look at the stigma against women for speaking up or even admitting to rape. Some get punished for being raped. That is why it is not reported. You can believe whatever you want to believe unfortunately it wouldn't change the reality of islamic women everywhere
