I like shooting raccoons,but I have a problem....?

Raccoons are carnivorous (meat eaters) and eat vegetation so once they are killed they start to decompose and bloat within just a few hours. This is called post mortem livitey (the bodily fluids leak out inside the raccoon as the tissue decomposes) Unless they are killed during a legal season and the pelts/hides are prime, I wouldn't even bother trying to skin them. The only solution other than tossing the carcass in the woods for other animals to eat the remains is to bury them. Refrigeration will slow the decomposition, but not stop it completely so the smell would be present anyway..regardless

Well, id check your state laws. I odnt know if any states are open for coon hunting of how the laws work in your state, but id check to be safe. I cant hunt coon till september even on my own land. Your best bet would be put them in the fridge or trry to get them in a freezer. Make some roon in yours or go out and but a little one.

I just went back and read some answers and id havent even thought of a cooler with bags of ice, and that will work.

Just break down and get a chest freezer you can get them fairly inexpensive for around a $100 buck, set the thermostat to its minimum to try to stay a little above freezing although you would probably be OK down to 20 degrees.

Instead of killin em you could just get an airsoft/soft air gun and shoot em it wouldnt kill em but they would learn a lesson just find one with the most feet per second (fps) and then you dont have to worry about skinin them.

If you have coyotes or bears near you don't worry about a rotting corps,they will disappear,like the one dude said if its not when the fur is at its prime,just toss them and when the sun goes down turn on the lights!

I have a great idea if you think that you can kill things and leave them lay you got another thing comming, how about if you shoot them and you think it is too dark to skin them........ TURN ON A LIGHT!!!!!!

Put them in a baggie and stick them in the fridge. The cold will slow down the decomposition.

Or, you could get a little freezer (like they have at Wal Mart and K Mart), and save the hides until you have enough to make you something nice.

Get a SHARP knife and gut the critters.

Put them in a bag...in refrigerator.

Next morning skin and take all fat off.

Wash thoroughly and cut into sections, place in baking / roasting pan with carrots onions, and other veggies. Add spice and put in 1/2 cup water, cover and bake until tender.

Walla...a feast for the family !
