I am looking for an exotic travel destination no more than a 4 hour's plane ride from Florida.?
I am looking for an exotic (read: not a touristy place) travel destination no more than a 4 hour plane ride from Florida. I've been to Mexico (too touristy) and Costa Rica already. Islands would be fine. Does anyone have any ideas for me?

I highly recommend Barbados, maybe if you take a direct flight, it would be less than 4 hours plane ride.
I've been there 6 times and planning on returning. They did not treat me like a tourist, they actually treat me like a local.

From Florida there are many "exotic" destinations in the Carribbean and Central and South America that can be reached by plane in 4 hours or less. Too numerous to name here, but a few that come to mind are Aruba, St. Maarten, Martinique, Trinidad and Tobago, Cozumel, Costa Rica and Belize.

Cuba via Cancun Mexico. I did it. Left Miami for Cancun. Once in Cancun, you tell customs you are staying in Cancun but instead you buy (cash) a 2-way ticket for La Havana (Cubana Airlines). Once you get to "La Havana," tell customs not to stamp your passport and instead, they will stamp a sheet of paper that you can get rid of once you leave Cuba. Then, try to find a family to stay with (which should be no problem. Everybody does that. It is the best way to discover Cuba in a "non-touristic" approach. I stayed one month in Santiago de Cuba (very few tourists) with a family... who became in a way my family. Amazing souvenirs. I am so glad I got to see this part of the world. Cuba is absolutely beautiful. When I returned to cancun, I stayed like 24 hours at a touristic place, spent a few bucks just in case INS would ask me for some proof of my stay (which never happened). I came back to the US with no problem whatsoever. (If you decide Cuba, please do research on your own of course as the trip can be more complexed that usual and don't hesitate to contact me if you need more info.)
Source(s): Guatemala would be my next choice. There are a few places there where you will not meet many tourists. Nebaj and San Andres to cite a few (I lived there 2 years). But if you want a really "beach, relaxing and easy" vacation, West Indies (Guadeloupe, Martinique, St. Vincent and St. Lucia) are great. I did not find Barbados as beautiful though. (no offense to the 1st answerer). As far as the Bahamas, Naussau is out of the question of course, but cat island, one of the outter islands of the Bahamas was quite peaceful and from what I can remember, I was the only tourist on it. great fish, beaches, quiet,... - ctelly22Lv 71 decade ago
Try St. Kitts. It's less than 2 hours from Miami, and unspoiled by tourists. I'm planing a trip there myself in November.

Try this place, it's called Petit St. Vincent Island, there's very few people on the island at one time and they have 2 staff to each person, it's very beautiful!
