A shih Tzu that coughs like something is in its throat?

I have a shih tzu and lately he's been coughing like something is caught in his throat, but when he coughs and hacks, it's a dry cough and nothing comes out. Is this normal? I know it's not like he ate something that's stuck in his throat. I want to know from fellow shih tzu owners if they've experienced this and if it's normal and what they did. Thanks.

My shih tzu does this and she has bad allergies, and has to take childrens benedryl. I would contact your vet they need to check to make sure his throat isnt irriated and that his air way is not closed in any way.. Then they will be able to tell you what your next step will be.

I had a shih-tzu puppy pass away recently as she got choked due to a congenital problem in which her trachea was too small. Not to worry you, Im not a doctor, but it is definitely worth mentioning in a trip to the vet. I wish I had known.... =(

You might want to check with your vet, but a lot of small dogs, as they age, will show signs of congestive heart failure. I have an overweight rat terrier with the same symptoms, and she takes Lasix, detox, and enalapril.

Call your vet. They should know, but if they say it's normal , then I have no other ideas- good question!

This is generally due to allergies. Try some children's allergy medicine.
