Why is belly putters better for putting then conventional ones?

Like most things, for some, they are better. For others, they aren't. Technically, anchoring a club to the belly, chest, chin, etc. eliminates breakdown of little muscles in the wrists. Theoretically, it would make sense that it would create a truer and more consistent stroke over time. But those opposed to using it cite loss of feel, which is critical when putting. Of course, no stick can overcome failure to read greens properly.

Incidentally, European Tour legend, Colin Montgomerie, who has used alternative putters quite a bit in his career, is on record as saying that they should all be abolished. He is so convinced that they provide a distinct advantage at the world class level. Yet, no one has ever won a major championship with anything but a traditional putter. Sergio Garcia was aiming to be the first-ever at the British Open.

They are not necessarily better they are just different. Putting is mainly based on feel and personal preference. Some players may like belly putters better, some may not like it better. Players who chose to use belly putters like that it is easier to putt with, since it takes some wrist action out of their putting stroke. Take Sergio for example, he just switched to a belly putter before the Open Championship, however his putting wasn't his strong point and was what eventually caused him to lose.

I think it's rediculous to think they are better. If they were better, wouldn't every pro use one? They all use large, titanium drivers now. Why, because they are better. And a long putter being used in wind seems like it would be a nightmare. Use of longer putters are almost always somone "hopelessly searching" for the answer. I'm a 3 handicap, and play about 175 rounds of golf a year. Give me a 35" Scotty Cameron blade, and I'm happy!

They're not better, although many think that the cross-handed, left-hand low grip is better.

Generally, I think belly putters are for those who can't get the ball in the hole with conventional putters. You don't see great putters like Crenshaw, Tiger, Stockton, etc . . . using belly putters

for poor putters like i was they remove the wrists and end flipping because they are anchored. good putters don't have these types of problems so hate its restrictions

they arent better, just different. it is another way to do it. it provides a single point and aids in forcing a pendulum motion for the putting stroke. it also helps to take wrist out of your putting.
