Does anyone know what would happen to a 65 lb lab if she ate an entire month's worth of birth control pills?

My lab ate an entire package of birth control pills and I can't even talk to the vet on the phone without paying $100... so does anyone have some information?

Well.. if she doesn't throw them up automatically which i'm sure she will SOME! of them... you need to get her to throw up. But i don't know of anything to tell you to get her to throw up! (Maybe someone else on here does)

Second... CALL ANOTHER VET!!! Theres got to be more than one! even if it is another town away. I live in a town with 1,000 people and we have 2 vets! Even if you can't talk to the vet... the receptionist shoudl be able to go and talk to the vet... Atleast that's how it is in our clinic! We try and answer all our customers questions correct and thorough... Anyway... See what they say. If they can tell you something to give her... great!!! But if they tell you to bring her in... you really need to bring her in... Overdose on anything for a human can be fatal... it works the same with dogs!!!!

If you can't get another vet... either you need to pay the $100 bucks... or save the $100 and put it toward the medical bill to take her in!

(btw... it should be illegal to charge that much for an over the phone consult! How acurate can that really be!!!--- Its 41 for an office visit at my clinic... that SEEING the dog. Personally i think you need a new vet!)

We have had to pump a few dogs stomachs because they ate rat poison. I have never dealt with a dog that ate birth control tho!!!

I hope i was of some assitance... a little as it may have been. Just tryin to help!

    Good LUck

I would try calling other vets. Look in a phonebook. I agree with the first post. I have never heard of a vet charging $100 for a question. You're vet is ripping you off big time. Also, Unicorn Rider has no idea what they are talking about. Birth Control pills only have 5-7 inactive pills in the pack. The rest of them ARE active. Even humans have side effects from taking that many pills. Kepp trying different vets until you get an answer. Your dog might get sick from all those pills.

You can call the ASPCA's poison control hotline. It's 800-548-2423. They'll charge you about $50, but they'll tell you what to do. You'll either leave her alone or induce vomiting. To induce vomiting, you can give your dog hydrogen peroxide. A 3% solution is best. Give him a teaspoon for every 10 lbs of his weight, in your case, 6-7 teaspoons, every 15-20 minutes until he throws up. Don't do this more than 3 times.

Do not induce vomiting if your dog has already vomitted, if he's unconscious or convulsing or having difficulty breathing. Don't induce vomiting if he's swallowed anything sharp. Don't do it if the label of your birth control pills says "do not induce vomiting".

After he vomits, give him a mix of 1/4 cup egg whites and 1/4 milk for every 10 lbs of his weight. It's easiest to give this to him with a syringe or turkey baster, etc.

Watch him to make sure he's acting OK. After all this, make sure to give him some Pedialyte to drink, along with his water, so he doesn't get dehydrated. You should take him right away to the vet if he's having any nervous-system symptoms like stupor or convulsing, etc. Also, if he swallowed the pills over 2 hours ago, it is too late to induce vomiting and you have to take him to the vet.

  • Call a different vet. No vet I have EVER heard of charges for a phone consult. Call around until you can get an answer. I imagine it could make her pretty nauseous...they may want to induce vomiting. Just keep calling different vets until you can get an answer.

At our clinic, visiting us after hours is only $95, and that includes actually looking at your dog. Your vet is a rip off artist.

Most of the pills are active. Only the placebo pills at the end of the pack aren't (4-7 pills, depending on what brand you take). Those are the pills that allow you to have your period and are there to remind you to take them. The rest of the pills in the pack have active hormones.

I'm guessing she won't get pregnant!

Seriously, check in your area for an animal poison control phone # or an emergency vet clinic. We've got both around here.

Since birth control pills are just a bunch of hormones, I'm thinking that there wouldn't be any lasting effects, but maybe some short term issues until she gets it out of her system.

Call poison control. This is such an unusual situation that your normal vet might not be fully informed on how to handle it.

    http://www.aspca.org/site/PageServer?pagename=pro_...

The telephone number is (888) 426-4435. There is a $55 consultation fee for this service.

Then call another vet. Sounds like you've got a vet that only cares about the money and not the animals. I have no idea what could happen to your dog, but its better to be safe and call someone that knows.

Please call the vet asap! Sometimes you need to induce vvomiting immediately but in some cases vomiting can make things worse. Good luck, take swift action and chances are far better. Labs are very sturdy and resilient dogs, hopefully you will just have a funny story to tell in the future.

A agree with Tom I call poison control. I'd be looking for an emergency vet right now too. Your dog is in real danger for toxic poisioning.

Call around, and don't use that first vet again.

Bear in mind that most borth control pills only have 5 or 6 active tablets, the rest are to keep you in the habit of taking it daily.
