Why the national uproar over Vick?

nobody cared about dogfighting to this degree until a superstar got busted for it. People are really publicly convicting him because of his attitude. If he were more like tikki barber other iverson he'd got more love. Its funny roy jones is famous for cockfighting but no PETA! Look up hogdog!! I see people getting busted all the time on animal planet but know peta protest in those cities. Besides animal shelters put them to sleep an soon as they impound them without gining any chance in most states. I guess im just confused why the big national uproar.

Big national uproar because most people can relate to owning a dog or knowing someone who owns a dog. Dogs are lovable creatures. Most people have never seen a rooster in person. Even if they did, they are not very friendly. Plus, the rooster's counterpart (hen) is killed for food everyday.

Vick is singled out because he is famous and very rich. He earns his money from the ticket sales, sports gear sales and other products that he endorses that the public buys. Those opposed to dog fighting feel appalled at having contributed to his ability to perform such cruelty. The national uproar is further fanned by the news coverage given to it. If the newspapers, televsion and internet did not cover this topic so in depth, nobody would pay as much attention.

In the state I live in, punishing people for dogfighting is actively pursued. Vick is being publicly convicted for a couple reasons. He is a role model for children, he is a public figure & he ran the whole damn thing. Having over 50 dogs for the purpose of fighting is sick. Animal shelters put them down because they do not know how to live without bloodshed or they are so physically damaged, it would be cruel to allow them to continue to suffer. And they cannot adopt them out for fear of people or other animals being hurt or killed. I'm not sure why you should be confused unless you think it's alright to benefit from others suffering. PETA gets involved in many cases where the authorities have been reluctant to do their jobs. I have a dog that was supposed to be used as pitbull bait & it's still a day to day job to make her know she's safe & sound. Maybe you should volunteer to be the bait or have to clean up after one of these fights to fully feel the dispair & pain.

Probably because until someone famous was busted for it...most people were unaware that it was so big or popular. I have never even heard of Roy Jones. There is no love for animal abusers because luckily, MOST people have more sensitivity than that.

Animal planet does bust people for this, you're right...and it sickens people to see it. It's not as if the public EVER thought it was okay. They just didn't hear about it enough to realize that there were SO many cruel idiots out there. They thought it was a fluke.

He did what he did, such as you stated new child abusers get off much less stressful than him. no longer that what he did wasn't terrible yet abusing teenagers is somewhat undesirable. maximum new child abusers do no longer lose a hundred million or extra over it. He did time in detention center, misplaced a ton of money and now he's 29 years previous with a small window of time left to do something useful. we could wish he makes the better of it! PETA is an extremely good organizatiion that is going after animal abusers. Vick is a intense profile one so he's and could be in PETA's attractions for years yet to come again.

Because. Imaging being forced to fight for a living. Not like in boxing or wrestling. Real fighing, a lot of the time until death. And the reason PETA is protesting is, number one, people get suspended from the NFL for sillier things, and number two, simply because that is what they do. Dog AND cockfighting are very serious crimes. Michael Vick and his friends also weren't just fighting. They were breeding puppies, sweet, innocent puppies, to fight until they were old enough to fight. They were also electrocuting dogs to get them aggressive and sometimes simply to kill him. I personally think Vick should be arrested and locked away for many years, but that is just my opinion. He is "a star" and will get "star treatment".

  • It's finally getting national attention and the people who didn't have a clue that this barbaric "sport" existed are finally getting their eyes opened.

    Good.

More ammunition and support to shut the "sport" down. The sooner the better.

And the reason some animal shelters euthanize pit bulls as soon as they get them into custody is because pits who have been raised for fighting will not be temperament-suited for pet homes. Fighting is what they know, fighting is what they do. Euthanizing them is the only humane option to let them out of the hell that humans put them in.

Regardless who does it it is sick and the person should be tortured to no end. I have fought for the issue for years and my hatred for it has not changed for the cruel thing or the monster who do it. I think because Vick is well known figure it causes a bigger stir and those people who are role models for others as Vick is for many kids should be held to a higher standard. He should use his money for better things not for torture. He commited a crime and him being in the public eye needs to be punished. He makes the money off the public and shold be an upstanding citzen NOT A MONSTER>

Because dog-fighting is cruel and people have the perception that it is only backwoods people who would do such a thing. To see a public figure engage in such atrocious behavior, someone who has as many opportunities to do good and should have people around him to help him protect his public image, shocks the populous.

The dogs involved in this are usually put down because they are so damaged mentally, that they are not safe to the general public. Many humans are attacked by dogs involved in fighting. You justification is a fallacy. Dog-fighting is the source of the problem that results in the dog's sad ends.

It is the price you pay for being a celebrity. Its like the double edged sword. You get fame and fortune, but you also do not get any privacy. People always want to know what you are doing. It isnt fair, but at the same time he should have known that (if he is guilty) that was extremely wrong for anyone to do especially an ICON like himself.

I say it all the time though, no one cares about you until you are on TV.

for openers - shouldn't athletes be role models for kids? he is getting national press over this because he gets national press over his mulit million dollar job. are you complaining about that too?

yes, lots of work has been done about dog fighting - by the national animal welfare orgs as well as local HS's. they are busting them all the time.

shelters kill dogs that have been used for fighting because they cannot be rehabbed & are dangerous lethel weapons
