Aside from the price, I think the iPhone has three drawbacks.

    1. It is only available from ATT wireless, so your choice of service plans (which is by far the greatest expense) is limited. T-Mobile will be offering the iPhone in Euro markets, so maybe there is some hope that American consumers will have some choice in the future.

    2. If you do a great deal of typing, the keyboard is a little cumbersome. There is some new tactile feedback technology that might improve the experience of typing on a piece of glass in the future, but for now it takes some getting used to.

    3. For some obscure reason (probably related to battery life) the designers chose to use GPRS/EDGE data connections which are substantially slower than 3G data connections. Some articles about the phone mentioned the wider availability of GPRS/EDGE, and there are MANY more consumers within reach of the slower wireless connection, but the phone should have been able to adapt to either. Of course, as an offsetting feature, the phone does work with WiFi, which is more ubiquitous than it used to be, and probably will continue to proliferate, and it's really fast.

I think the iPhone will be popular for a long time, but i'd like to see them address these issues. Also it remains to be seen whether 3rd party apps will be usable on the phone, and that would be a big plus for users (security issues aside). That is also one of the major drawbacks of the Sidekick/Danger phones.
