Lorenzen was down by 3 laps with 4 laps to go Richard Petty had an engine failure and Lorenzen took advantage of that.

It was the Volunteer 500 at Bristol International Speedway.

It was Lorenzen's 6th win of the year.

Fred Lorenzen is the only winner in Bristol history to have only led only the final lap to win a race. Petty should have won led all other laps but had rear end problems.

He became the first driver to wear an "adult diaper" during a race so he wouldn't have to make a potty stop.
