Genesis : The lamb lies down on broadway. - unlike anything they'd used before and not a little sinister.Even now they get asked what was going on with that cover.
Caravan : for girls who grow plump in the night - It looks quite inoffensive these days but it caused a right old stink at the time.Very cleverly done, too - a hipgnosis job.
Jethro Tull : Minstrel in the gallery - A very clued up mockery of a classic painting.Look close and there's a fair bit of debauchery going on.
Pink Floyd : Animals - An iconic image and still very striking to this very day.
Soft Machine : Volume Two - Who knows what on earth is going on in this mocked up collage of the bizarre and the wierd.
I didn't include any Yes because i was never much of a fan although the Fragile cover is a belter.

Good question!
Nursery Crymes by Genesis is the cover for me (though not album). It has such sinister overtones. As did most of Whitehouses covers. I have spent far too much time looking at the cover of VdGG's H to H e (the picture is called 'Birthday', and is also by Whitehouse) trying to figure it out...

Dark Side Of The Moon...the simple iconicness of it instantly known the world over.I also like Yes-Close To The Edge.In the world of Album covers less is more I think.

Pampered Menial by Pavlov's Dog. I get the feeling it's a piece of artwork rather than an original sleeve design, though. Wonderfully expressive for what is a still picture.
