I am confused by the Phillies latest trade. Maybe you can help me understand?
We need pitching desperately, and everyone knows this is our weakest area of play. Yet they trade for a second baseman. I understand that we just lost Chase Utley which is a great loss, but we have SO many backup infielders already on the bench. For example Greg Dobbs, and Abraham Nunez could split second base and time on third base.
Why did they waste the energy with this trade when it is only going to be a waste of time anyway?

I don't completely disagree with you. The Phillies priority should be adding an arm somewhere. Unfortunately, everyone wants a king's ransom for even their serviceable pitching, and everyone in the pennant race is looking for pitching. The Phillies don't really have the top notch prospects teams are looking for when it comes to moving a pitcher.
It's all a question of supply and demand. 2nd base is a spot where very few teams (the Mets, i.e.) are looking for help, and there are several players available. Mark Loretta, Ty Wigginton, Mark Grudzielanek, Luis Castillo and Tad Iguchi were/are all probably obtainable.
The Phillies didn't give up much, a Class A pitcher, and they get a quality player with postseason experience to fill in while Chase Utley is out.

The problem is the players on the bench should spot start or pinch hit....there is no way they are remotely in the same time zone talent-wise as Utley. Myers has made great progress in his rehab pitching assignments and he will be a big boost to the staff. And, at the end of the season, the Phils could deal Iguchi and receive more in return than they gave up to get him.

Iguchi is great but I don;t know why the White Sox made it. They got a single A player for a major leaguer. He is a free agent at the end of the season so he could be good trade bait in the off-season.

their is no starting pitcher out there. you have to get the best available player.
