My sister is the same age and here's some of the things that she likes to do. Play games on http://atv.disney.go.com/playhouse/index.html, they can be very educational and lots of fun for small children because the characters they love are always there playing with them. Bowling, put-put, and movies are always fun, and as you said parks. But remember he is still a little kid so don't have him doing math problems and stuff all day, let him play and just be a kid while it lasts.

I have two little boys, four and five years old. My oldest is starting kindergarten next month. One of their favorite things to do at night is to do "workbooks". My husband and I trade off sitting with them individually, working on Leap Frog workbooks for their ages. Since Leap Frog is actually one of the few educational toys/books/videos out there that are actually entertaining to kids, they have learned a LOT. Depending on which editions you get, you can print up sticker charts, coloring pages, and parent guides with a cd included. The workbooks themselves are out of print now, I think, but Amazon has some left (links below). They cost next to nothing.

The Leap Frog website has some games, too : http://www.leapfrog.com/Primary/Games.jsp

Also lots of reading time. I've picked up some of the Steps to Reading books (okay, I don't remember what they're actually called, but they have Dora, Diego, Cars, Chicken Little and Toy Story books, at different levels for children learning to read). The words are simple, the sentences are short, but they are specifically made that way to help young children learn to read. And they're topics and simple stories that are interesting to older preschoolers and early elementary schoolers.

MAN I'm glad we don't have year-round schooling. My kids would NOT take well to the three weeks on/three weeks off deal.

http://www.pbskids.org/ is a classic, of course, with games and coloring pages for Sesame Street, Caillou, Arthur, and all the PBS kids shows.

You may want to call around to local libraries, zoos, etc. to see if they have any kids events. Since there is at least one school in the area that has three weeks off, they may have some stuff planned for the off weeks.

If there is a Mud Hut (or another pottery-painting place) in your area, call them up and see if they have any children's events coming up, or just go with your son. My five-year-old has had several field trips to the local Mud Hut, and he "made" my Valentines Day present (a ceramic heart that hangs from a ribbon) and my husband's Father's Day present (a square... a true testament that it's the thought that counts... we're not entirely sure what it is supposed to be, but it's brightly painted and very squarey.) Barnes & Noble has storytime year-round.
