KG to Boston... Will they automatically become the "Team to beat"?

Rumors from WEEI in Boston are that Kevin Garnett is heading to Boston in exchange for Theo Ratliff, Al Jefferson, Gerald Green, Sebastian Telfair and a future draft pick...

With the Addition of KG to Pierce and Allen do the Celtics finally have what it takes return the franchise to greatness or will they continue to flounder from year to year?

Update:

To Mr. Hat & all others, I checked the trade on ESPN's Trade Machine, It works financially.

Update 2:

Mr. Hat - Garnett said he'd be happy to go to Boston now that they also have Ray Allen.

First of all Mr. Hat, all the stories I have read say that the trade is final and awaiting to be announced. Second of all, your basing your facts on the potential trade that happend in June.

Yes i think if this trade goes through the celtics will be a favorite to win the east, but it will be difficult due to the fact that we will have alot of tough competition in the cavs, pistons and every other team that have dominated us in the past few years.

Man, I'm sorry to say this, but that trade will NEVER happen. First of all, if I'm not mistaken, their salaries don't add up. But suppose they did, why would the Timberwolves do that trade? Sebastian Telfair is a 5-11 PG that can't run an offense and has no outside shot. Theo Ratliff is at the end of his career. And Al Jefferson and Gerald Green have a lot to learn before anyone wins with them. Do you honestly think the Wolves would trade the face of their franchise for that? Especially when players like Amare Stoudamire have been on the table?

KG on the Celtics would make them contenders, but it won't happen. Sorry.

Whatever, dude. KG has said himself he doesn't want to play there. It ain't happening.

OK, I owe you guys an apology. You were right and I was wrong. Frankly I thought the Wolves could have gotten more for him.

The main problem as I see it is that the Celtics are going to be very hard pressed to come up with enough to match the salaries. Ratliff and Jefferson alone only equal $14 million. Garnett is due to make $22 million and has a $6.75 million trade kicker that pushes his salary up to almost $29 million. That means the Celtics need to come up with roughly $14 million more in salary to make the money matchup.

The Celtics payroll for next year is currently set at a little over $63 million with Allen and Pierce scheduled to make a little over $32 of that. Which means the Celtics have roughly $30 million in other salaries to work with. This also means the Celtics probably have to trade over half the roster to get Garnett leaving them with Allen, Pierce, and a bunch of D-League players. I am just not sure how they make the math work to get this done.

That is also not to mention that KG is going to demand to have an extension in hand to agree to this deal. It means the Celtics will be capped out for at leas the next three years and leaves them little to no flexibility to make any other moves.

This is an extremely bad trade but i think McHale may pull the trigger. The reason for that is KG can leave the team next season and wolves want some return if they'll lose KG. Al Jefferson is the key point of the trade. Theo gives cap relief next season with his 11 mil$ contract. Green seems to have some more room to improve but if KG gonna leave minnesota next season then it's better to have some talent in return. However retirement of KG in wolves uniform is my only wish.

No. They are giving up way too much in the way of support players. Who is going to come in to back up KG, Ray and Paul. There just is not enough talent there even for the East for them to all of a sudden become a great franchise again. Ray and Paul have to show they can get through a season without being on the injured list to have any sort of chance of making the playoffs.

if the celtics r gunna get rid of al jefferson then maybe its not as worth it 4 them. think how itwould b if they wouldnt give a away jefferson:

    C Kevin Garnett (yeah, right)

    PF Al Jefferson

    SF Paul Pierce

    SG Ray Allen

    PG Rondo

but even if they do get rid of AJ- they will definitely b THE team 2 beat

Well to be completely honest they don't need a great team to make the playoffs in the east. I'll believe this trade when it actually happens

if they can play well together, if not it could be another long season. I see a playoff run this year.
