Couple of questions for you!
1) what state do you live in?
2) do you have an SSN?
3) did you get the actual approval notice or a receipt stating that you papers were recieved at INS?
I can't help you with Number 1 until i know what state you are from.
#2 is helpful because you can go to your DMV office and just tell them you need to renew your license. As long as you have your SSN they won't create a problem.
#3 can be helpful because it states that you are in the country leagally and can be used to prove your legallity.
If you DO NOT have an SSN then I would recommed that you go to your local social security office show them you I-797(H1 approval) and the will file your ssn with no problems but that will take 2 weeks minimum.
Yeah, just remembered: your H-1 paper should have a new 1-94 which is your new expiry date for your drivers license. The date indicates your legal immigration status in the USA
