Is a $1000. too much to pay for the AC to repaired on a Ford Taurus?

I recently bought a 2000 Ford Taurus and the AC doesn't work. The man reduced the sales price by $350. so I could have it repaired. But the first mechanic said that because the vehicle was in an accident that the repair will be more labor intensive and require more than 1 part. He has told me the parts will run about $500. and the labor for installing them will be about $500... I'm really upset over this entire ordeal. I need to find out if this guy is trying to get over on me or not. He claims to be a Christian man. My DH and myself are disabled and in desperate need of transportation and we keep having bad luck trying to find us a good reliable vehicle. Any advise on what we can do? Should we get the AC repaired?---Even though it's costly? Should we get rid of this car and get another? Help....

It depends on how hot it gets where you live and what its worth to you. $1000 does not seem out of line, however you need to decide how long you plan to keep the car and if it is worth it for your comfort in the future.

well you probably won't get out of it what you paid with no AC.

Take it to another shop. Did you buy the car from a dealer. If you did he is required to tell you it was in an accident and has forms for you to fill out, If that is the case take it back.

If you bought it from an individual call them and ask them why they didn't tell you. usually carfax should have a repaired cars ID on it .

A compressor will run a lot of money as will a condenser and evaporator. If the A/C system has been open to the air for a while 1,000 bucks is about right, if the car was in a front end collision, 1,000 is about right.

Not all mechanics that have shops are rip offs in fact few that have shops are, it is the ones that have little garages that are messy and they do the work them selves.

If the shop is certified it is OK.

If not go to one that is and get a second quote, you don't have to get it reapaired at the first place and if they charge you for a quote. LEAVE!

I just sold my 99 Taurus becase the AC failed. I knew it wasn't worth the $250 for the new AC Cluch. The parts for AC are best case as follows: Condensor: $200, Compressor: $400, Evaporator:$150, Dryer:$100. Ok, so those are my guess prices, but if you have an open system, there could be damage to any one of these parts. Next to refill the system, that alone costs $200 in gas! No, $1,000 for AC is not an over charge. My suggestion, sell the car. OR, if you want another solution... buy a power inverter and a very small (cheap) window type AC unit. Mount this in your fold down back seat. Looks stupid but keeps you cool. You can buy the stuff you need for just $500, be sure to match the inverter with the power needs of the AC unit. Good Luck!

If the accident repairs were done properly the ac problem should be just as easy to repair as a car that wasn't in an accident. If the accident repairs were done so poorly that repairing the ac is more difficult than normal I wouldn't want a car that has been patched together there may be safety problems as well. Get a 2ND opinion and if the second mechanic says the same thing I would dump the car.

Well the easy way to figure out if the labor is right is to go online to your goverment page and look for the Commissioner of Motor Vehicles for your state and they will list how much they can charge maximum for labor, as with towing and storage and such. Parts are a whole other story they can pretty much mark them up as much as they want but its not usually more than 1/2 depending on the mechanic.

If the person who sold you the vehicle seems to think the air can be repaired for $350 ask them to have it repaired and you'll pay them the $350 when it's fixed.Otherwise ask for your money back. There are laws protecting you from misrepresentation, especially for those whom are disabled! You said the first mechanic? What did the second one say? Who is the ripoff? I think the seller

a million. Yep. it is fantastically reasonable. frequent expenditures i've got considered are around $1500 for head restoration. 2. Your automobile is particularly nicely worth greater suitable than $one thousand, no count number if it extremely is nicely well worth the restoration or not, is as much as you. 3. Yeah, and? Welcome to a similar financial gadget that everybody else is in. As a edge be conscious, you do not purchase a automobile that doesn't screw up. All you're doing is paying for a automobile. How nicely YOU safeguard it, restoration it, etc, will finally tutor how good the vehicle is. do not safeguard it precise, and a sparkling automobile can smash down on you interior a 300 and sixty 5 days. safeguard it nicely, and it will final to 3 hundred,000 like 2 of my autos have.

That is about right if all the parts and peices are bad, compressor, condenser etc.

As for repairing the AC, wow, tough question.

do you live in a climate where AC is used a lot?

If all you do is short drives, it might be just as well to roll your windows down and sweat, I know that sounds like a smart aleck answer but to tell you the truth, that is exactly waht I am doing.

NO IT IS NOT TO HIGH BUT LOOK AT THE BIG PICTURE, WHEN THIS MECHANIC IS FINISHED WILL THE REST OF THE SYSTEM WORK.

YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO BLAME HIM BECAUSE HE WILL ONLY BE REPLACING WHAT YOU WANT.

I THINK YOU GOT RIPPED OFF FROM THE START, ANYTIME SOMEONE TELLS YOU THAT ANY A/C SYSTEM WILL ONLY NEED MINOR WORK, MY ANSWER TO ALL PEOPLE IS IF THAT IS THE CASE THEN WHY DOESN'T THE SELLER FIX IT BEFORE THEY SELL IT, IT WOULD SELLER FOR A BETTER PRICE.

car dealer price, I'm suprised it wasn't more! Ask around and see who your friends can do the job. Find someone that works out of their own garage at their house, they'll be a lot cheaper.
