Will I be safe in a taxi in Egypt going from my hotel to the Egyptian museum or should I hire a guide?

I'm going on a tour but will be in Cairo a few days early.

Update:

I'm staying at the Cairo Marriott. Is it very far from the museum? How much should it cost to get there by taxi?

there is absolutely no problem using a taxi in egypt. you wouldn't need a guide to anywhere. in the contrary, they will be glad to drive a tourist, knowing well he will pay 3 times more than an egyptian. and all about, depending on what hotel you'll stay you can do the egyptian museum by only a few minutes walk (nile hilton, ramses hilton, sheraton...). lived there for many years.
