Do you need a passport to walk or drive into Canada via Niagara Falls? What about coming back?

Some websites say yes and some say no. It's very confusing! Please help!

From the looks of this the answer is 'No'... dated June 7, 2007. But, depends when you are planning to travel...

"US Citizens Visiting Canada by Land or Water

The other date, which is when the WHTI will require citizens to present a passport when crossing the Canadian border by land or water, is yet to be determined. The deadline for the changes to take place, however, is June 1st, 2009. The deadline was previously January 1, 2008."

No, to walk or drive into canada and return back to the states you do not require a passport until 2008, it is only if you are flying that you require a passport right now.

As the others have said, you only need a driver's license and another proof of ID. You can walk through any border crossing, you just have to stop and report to Canada Customs.

Not until 2008. From what I have heard it takes about 4 months to get a passport back. YMMV Good Luck, Enjoy your trip.

The answer for now is No, like everyone says. As of this year it was only for Air travel, which has been delayed. One thing I should mention is you cannot walk across the border. Unless Niagara is different, other borders it is NOT permitted.
