Has anyone ever successfully changed an office to being smoke-free?
There is still a "smoking section" in our cafeteria, and I sit as far away from those tables as I can and I just can't take it anymore. They claim they have a "ventilation system", but you can still see the cloud of smoke. I shouldn't have to move because of other peoples decision to smoke. How do I go about petitioning for a smoke-free office?

Talk to your boss and to his/her boss. Don't expect to change you office overnight. What's important is that each one who's upset complain. When the complaints mount, management will have to do something, so encourage people who share your view to voice their opinions.

Having a no smoking section in your cafeteria or in a restaurant is like having a no peeing section in a swimming pool.
In government work spaces they are smoke free. I can't think of why an office would have smoking allowed...especially in these days. What grabs my goober is the smokers can walk outside to take a smoke break, while the non-smokers have to stay at work! I see this on the base every day...the smoking gazebo is a good 5 minute elevator ride/walk from the office. So add 5 minutes to and from, plus another 5 - 10 minutes to take a smoke break (more than one cigarette)...you lose a lot of time during the day from smokers...yet no one says anything. Afraid to 'make waves'.
Fortunately, out of 14 gov't contractors I work with none of us smoke (1 did but after having a collapsed lung, his doc made him quit). The gov't workers (12) only have 1 that I know of that smokes.
NO SMOKING in your office/building? YES it can be done, but you non-smokers have to be willing to step on some toes. Start with your immediate supervisor and work your way up. Not union? Start a petition for NON-SMOKING in the building and present it to the top dogs. Get statistics about loss of work due to smoke breaks, too. Dig, dig, dig. Get your facts together, you signatures and go for it!
Good luck!
