How can I get my 5 month old Bichon Frise pup to stop eating his poop?
He eats it when we we're not at home. We don't know why he does this. He's such a smart dog in all aspects except that he eats his poop. When we are at home, probably the only reason why he doesn't eat it, is because we clean it right away before he gets the chance to do so. He is well fed and always has snacks and kibble and plenty of water. We thouhght that maybe he just doesn't like his kibble but he eats that just fine. He's not sick or anything. But what could cause this? And how do I get him to stop?

The scientific name for this behavior is coprophagy. The reasons range from boredom to hunger to vitamin defiency to anxiety. First notify your vet to ensure it is not a vitamin deficiency or something more serious.
On the plus side there is a medication out there called Dis-Taste that you add to their food and it makes their feces taste horrible to them to break them of this habit. You can find it on http://www.drsfostersmith.com/ just do a product search.

It's a puppy thing...you can buy an additive that can be put into your puppy's food that will deter it from eating it's poop. Just remember to be consistent in putting it in the food.

first of all DO NOT LET HIM WATCH YOU CLEAN IT UP! he will want to help you....by eating it lol.
or he might like how it tastes, in which case you should put hot sauce on it right after he pottys or put a little bit of pinapple juice in each of his meals which will make his poo taste very bad to him! Good Luck!

when my dogs were pups, they did the same thing. my vet and dog trainer both suggested putting garlic in the dog's food. they love to eat the garlic, but for whatever reason hate to eat it when it comes out the other end!!!
