You don't need money to entertain children... most people get caught up in these birthday parties to such an extent, it becomes a competition between parents to come up with something better than the last (and more expensive).
Just remember... kids LOVE to play and don't care how much things cost.... just find 2 or 3 really good games or activities to keep them busy for an hour... eat cake and open presents... they'll ALL love it... and you'll be the envy of all other parents when their kids say how much fun they had ;-) ...and you won't have spent ANY money (well, very little anyway).
Classics:
1) musical chairs
2) pin the tail on the donkey
3) home-made pinata (paper-mache over a baloon, fill with candy)
Other stuff:
1) American Idol (girls dress up and sing to favorite songs... don't even need karoke, just a CD player)
2) Pool party, if you already have a cheap plastic pool, setup sprinklers, etc.
3) Tee-shirt party... tie-die... fabric markers, etc... just have each child bring a plain t-shirt instead of a gift.
4) Dress-up... everyone brings an outfit, but brings it to share with others... just keep trading off, etc.

You can do a Little Mermaid theme. Is perfect for this summer and you can do lots of fun activities. ex: pool party if available or do games for kids. You can buy prizes at 99 cents store or go to Target, they also have a $1 section at the entrance. Instead of buying theme decorations I would suggest getting everything that will match little mermaid colors instead. This would also save lots of $$$. As for the food you can try fried chicken or lemon chicken already made from Stater Bros. with some potatoe salad. This will keep you away from kitcken and you'll have more time to enjoy the party. You can also make your own invitations. print them on the computer, roll them and tight them'up with purple, turquoise or pink ribbon and glue a pearl on the middle. This would be really cute and easy to make.

My son just went to a birthday party that was school themed. The mother figured since most 5 year olds are starting school what better theme to have. It was really cute. they all got a tiny pack of 4 crayons and a pencil with a cute erasor and ruler as party favors presented in a brown paper bag like you would take a lunch in. They got to play with a huge chalkboard while we were there, played a game where the mom held up a flashcard and whoever called out the correct letter won the round. Of course everyone got something. Then of course regular kid games duck, duck, goose and a pinata shaped like a crayon. It was very cute

I know a great party idea for that age we did this for my daughter when she was about that age.We had a dress up party. Some of the girls came in coustomes but we also had a toy box filled w/ dress up.
We did a crown craft. Each little girl got their own crown made from gold paper(you can use Burger king crown for a stencil)
then decorate them with glitter etc.
Also you can give each girl a pretzel rod cover with frosting and sprinkle witk jimmies. They can probally decorate them themselves. When they are done they have to say a magical word before eatting their fairy wands.(I got this idea from a disney creative website)
You can have someone come (even a family member)dressed as a fairytale character and read a story about that character.
you can also get a pinata and fill with little necklaces, ponytails, girly stuff a lot of this kind of stuff you can find in the dollar stores

Decorate the house and bring candy. Not a lot of candy though. Bring out things like chairs for musical chairs. Buy a CD that you know your daughter would like and play that CD for the birthday party. Be very creative with games though, like play freeze tag or a small game of sharks and Minos. Bring out markers and crayons and paper, and have a contest for whoever gets first, gets to eat cake first. If there's too much time and not enough to do turn some of the games into tournaments to make them go by faster.

I would say you could use any of these themes since i have a five yr old sister myself.
1.princess's and prince's
2.backyardigans
3.playhouse disney characters
4.nick jr characters
5. girls and boys fun time
i think that all of those themes are great and that the party should have some fun games and toys

Wow!! What great ideas! On one of my daughter's birthdays, I was broke, we did an wild animal theme. We bought those really cheap white paper plates, string, and some craft items like glitter, glue sequins, etc. We made masks from the plates, cut edges (like the lions mane), painted them and the kids would play games pretending they were animals at the zoo and in the wild. We also did a little face paint. Cake from warehouse store, homemade cookies, cool-aid and a few party favors, but I also put in stuff like pencils, cute erasers, etc., from the .99cent store, etc. The oriental trading company is also a great source, like the other poster mentioned. The kids didn't even need me to structure any type of games (although the classic musical chairs, etc., are always good). Before you knew it, 4 hours had passed!
