It is real... The President of Uganda sent away all the Asians from his country that includes the Indian's. They probably had a good business and had to sell right away. Most Asians in Uganda were pretty wealthy business men. It was a hard time for them, so I understand why they wouldn't want to talk.

It is a true account of events and people, now hollywood had to take a long story and put it in a few hours, so there is some things that may seem very cliche, but Amin was brutal, pompus and arrogant to the hilt, He did mahy atrocities, even the Liberal news had to admitt this guy was bad news for not only other nations, but his own. Yeah, they may have done well, but there not talking is saying alot about how nice it was there, and why did they leave there if it wa so nice right?

Garrigan is a fictional character, but his story is very loosely based on events in the life of English-born Bob Astles. Like the novel on which it is based, the film mixes fiction with real events in Ugandan history to give an impression of Amin and Uganda under his totalitarian rule. While the basic events of Amin's life are followed, the film often departs in the details of particular events.
The film condenses the timeframe of real events; for example, Amin expelled the Asians (Indians) in 1972, and the airplane hijacking took place in 1976, but in the film they appear to take place closer in time.
Many of the Ugandan landmarks seen in the movie did not exist in the 1970s.
