Help!!! Damsel in toilet distress!?
I tried to snake out the object that my child dropped into the toilet, unsuccesfully. I tried to take off the whole toilet and snake it out from the otherside; I broke the toilet. I am going to buy and install a new toilet tommorow. Can anyone tell me exactly what parts and tools I will need for this task so that I don't screw up again? Please speak very plainly and be precise as I am mechanically and technically challenged. And if your advice is to hire somone to do it for me keep it. I want to do this myself. I want to learn these kinds of things so that I won't have to call someone else. Thank you in advance.
All your answers were so helpful, thank you so much! I installed my new toilet and it works great. I love this place!

A wrench, a pair of pliers, a flexible hose connection, I'd say around 12" unless it should be longer, and a wax seal. Go to home depot or lowes and they can give you the right stuff.
When removing the toilet, make sure you get the entire old wax ring cleaned off.
Place the new ring over the drain and set the new toilet on it. The screws coming up from the floor should match. Just tighten the new nuts on them... but not too tight. Make sure the new toilet doesn't rock from side to side. Connect the water line and turn it on. Check for leaks.. flush it a few times and you are done.
Then you are an official toolbelt diva.

Installing a toilet is really not hard. You will need the toilet (of course) and a wax seal. the seals are very cheap and can be found in the plumbing dept. Also a wrench. Make sure to turn off the water first. Do that by turning the valve on the wall ( I am guessing you knew that. Scrape off all the old wax from the floor and place the new seal down. The hardest part will be next, lifting the new toilet into place. You need to line up the holes in the floor with the holes in the toilet base. Wiggle the toilet a bit to seat the toilet on the new seal. Bolt the toilet into the floor and connect the water lines to the toilet. Turn on the water and let the toilet fill. Good luck.

Then you better get a manual;
When you buy the toilet, also buy a wax ring seal. Did you notice when you took the old one off that it had a gooey seal? It may or may not have come out with the old toilet. If not, you have to clean the old wax from around the drain.
You will need the same tools you used to remove the toilet; a crescent wrench, or open-end wrench to fit the nuts that secure the floor bolts.
With the new toilet, place the wax ring in place around the drain, and carefully position the toilet so it sits On the eh ring without deforming it. Bolt it down snug, but not tight. Too tight, and you crack the ceramic toilet.
Sit the tank on the toilet, open the water valve, and you're back in business. Check carefully, through several flushes, for leaks around the seal.

It`s pretty easy. All you really need is a couple of wrenches & a large flat head screwdriver for the toilet seat, if it`s not already connected. Or you could use large pliers if you don`t have large adjustable wrenches. It`s best to try to remember the steps for removing the old one, so you can reattach the new one. Turn off water at the toilet & remove water lines from the tank. Flush the toilet & get as much of the remaining water out of the tank as you can. Remove the bolts holding the tank to the seat & take the tank off. Remove the bolts holding the seat to the floor & lift the seat off of the bolts. You`re ready to install your new toilet. You will probably need a new wax ring to seal around the floor. On a scale of 1-10, it`s a 3 for difficulty. Good luck!!

Your best bet is to get the entire kit and kaboodle in a box! That includes toilet, tank and was ring. Before removing old toilet, shut the water supply off. I think you then flush toilet to let the water out of the tank and the toilet bowl. Unscrew the bottom bolts at the sides of the toilet. After screws out, pull up hard on toilet to disconnect from old wax ring. Toilet is heavey! Clean out old was ring with scraper. Make sure it's dry before replacing with new was ring. Set new toilet on top in the right position and bolt down. Connect the tank (if not already connected) it bolts onto the toilet. Once it's all connected, turn water supply back on. Good luck!

1st on the floor where the toilet sat youll see a ring. scrape all of that off. go to a local hardware stor ask for a toilet ring youll put that down where the old one was youll sit your toilet on that that will it make sure you press it down hard enough. youll need toilet screwswhich all of the stuff youll need will come with your new toilet sometimes even the ring will. you can buy a do it yourself book to put in a toilet or go on the internet. that will help. but your hardware store will go step by step with you thats how i learned plus it helps my husband is handy.a true value,menards,homedepot. all those stores are good but i found the best to be your local hardware store if you have one.

Go to Lowes or Home Depot and ask for the complete toilet and installation kit, it all comes in one box. Dont forget to shut the water off
before you do anything.

then just do it, the instructions are in the box and the tool list is printed on the outside of the box. experience will be your best teacher here. my only advice is to tighten your bolts slowly and make sure you tighten evenly or the porcelain will crack. you know, when they get snug tighten the left one 2 turns, then the right one 2 turns, then the left, then the right, etc etc
