Christians&Muslims: A Letter from the Prophet Muhammad To The Assyrian Christians, what is your responsibility?
“God has told me in a vision what to do, and I confirm His command by giving my solemn promise to keep this agreement.
To the followers of the Islam I say: Carry out my command, protect and help the Nazarene nation in this country of ours in their own land. Leave their places of worship in peace; help and assist their chief and their priests when in need of help, be it in the mountains, in the desert, on the sea, or at home. Leave all their possessions alone, be it houses or other property, do not destroy anything of their belongings, the followers of Islam shall not harm or molest any of this nation, because the Nazarenes are my subjects, pay tribute to me and will help the Muslims. No tribute, but what is agreed upon, shall be collected from them, their church buildings shall be left as they are, they shall not be altered, their priests shall be permitted to teach and worship in their own way-the Nazarenes have full liberty of worship in their churches and homes. None of their churches shall be torn down, or altered into a mosque, except by the consent and free will of the Nazarenes. If any one disobeys this command, the anger of God and His Prophet shall be upon him.
“The tribute paid the Nazarenes shall be used to promote the teachings of Islam and shall be deposited at the treasury of Beth Almal. A common man shall pay one denar (piece of money), but the merchants and people who own mines of gold and silver and are rich shall pay twelve denars. Strangers and people who have no houses or other settled property shall not have taxes levied upon them. If a man inherits property he shall pay a settled sum to the Baitulmal treasury. The Christians are not obliged to make war on the enemies of Islam, but if an enemy attacks the Christians, the Muslims shall not deny their help, but give them horses and weapons, if they need them, and protect them from evils from outside and keep the peace with them. The Christians are not obliged to turn Muslims, until God’s will makes them believers.
“The Muslims shall not force Christian women to accept Islam, but if they themselves wish to embrace it, the Muslims shall be kind to them.
“If a Christian woman is married to a Muslim and does not want to embrace Islam, she has liberty to worship at her own church according to her own religious belief, and her husband must not treat her unkindly on account of her religion. If any one disobeys this command, he disobeys God and his prophet and will be guilty of a great offense.
“If the Nazarenes wish to build a church, their Muslim neighbors shall help them. This shall be done, because the Christians have obeyed us and have come to us and pleaded for peace and mercy.
“If there be among the Christians a great and learned man the Muslims shall honor him and not be envious of his greatness.
“If any one is unjust and unkind to the Christians he will be guilty of disobeying the Prophet of God.
“The Christians should not shelter an enemy of Islam or give him horse, weapon or any other help. If a Muslim is in need the Christian shall for three days and nights be his host and shelter him from his enemies. The Christians shall, furthermore, protect the Mohammedan women and children and not deliver them up to the enemy or expose them to view. If the Nazarenes fail to fulfil these conditions, they have forfeited their right to protection, and the agreement is null and void.
“This document shall be entrusted to the Christian chief and head of their church for safe keeping.”
The peace of God be over them all! This agreement is written by Moavijah Ben Sofian, according to the dictates of Muhammad, the Messenger of God, in the 4th year of the Hegira in the city of Medina.
Al Qur’an says:
“Those who restrain their anger and pardon men. And Allah loves the doer of good (to others)” (3: 133)
Now that you have seen this letter what is your responsibility as a Muslim or a christian?

norcalislam - not all Christians think that way.
MUHAMMAD, that is a comforting piece of literature you have given. It shows to me that Muhammad (pbuh) really was inspired of God, as I have believed for some time.
My own religion (LDS/Mormon) also believes in prophets and our prophets taught us that Muslims who live up to their responsibilities will go to heaven, just like us. So you see, not all Christian religions are closed-minded about their Muslim brothers. I'm glad to know many good Muslims.
To answer your Question, according to Muhammad (pbuh), my responsibility is to not support any enemy of Islam, and to protect the modesty and safety of Muslim women. I certainly do this to the best of my ability. I've always thought (and said) that the war on Iraq was completely illegal and immoral.
What scares me is this: "If the Nazarenes fail to fulfil these conditions, they have forfeited their right to protection, and the agreement is null and void."
Unfortunately, I live in a country (Australia) where the government has shown itself more friendly to it's own economic interests (and those of its allies) than it is to justice. As a Christian who has always fulfilled the conditions of the agreement you have mentioned, I could easily be killed by a militant Muslim who supposed that, in general, Australians had "forfeited their right to protection."
How could a Muslim know which individuals have lived true to this agreement of peace between brothers and sisters who love Almighty God? If my neighbor supports the enemies of Islam, and his house is bombed, I (an innocent) could be killed. It seems to me that the only way to avoid killing our brothers and sisters (who are loved by God) is to avoid killing anyone.
We can see how "them" and "us" thinking has killed thousands of innocent (non-violent) Muslim Iraqis. I hope that Muslims and Christians all over the world will fight the corruption in politics, but not fight each other with weapons. Indeed, there is a great need that we all "restrain [our] anger and pardon men."
To act in "justice" against "Nazarenes" who have failed to live up to their side of the agreement, is likely to lead to accidental punishment (ie death) of those who have done no wrong.
Peace brother.

If the Muslims would stop persecuting the Christian women by throwing acid in their faces because they are not dressing correctly in Iraq, if they would stop killing Priests in Iraq, if they would stop blowing up Christian Churches in Iraq, I would accept Islam as a peaceful Religion.
Now, I will get thumbs down from Muslims for posting this, I will be their brunt of their anger instead of the few Muslim radicals that are doing these things. Do not get mad at me, get mad at them!
I have studied Islam from Muslims, I know that the radicals are a minority. I pray that the moderate Muslims prevail!
Peace be with you!

First off, let me say that I DO NOT condone the killing of innocent people, of any faith, race, or ethnicity. That being said, how many "Christians" today are true Christians, as were the Assyrians? Not many, I'll wager. The Assyrians in that time (the time of the Prophet Mohammad, pbuh) were his allies, they were not aligned against him in an unjust war against Islam, as many Christians today are. Remember, Christianity has changed to fit "The Times". Now there are homosexuals who are ORDAINED MINISTERS!! Is this the intention of the prophet Jesus? I know that it isn't, Jesus himself said so-"Think not I am come to destroy the laws of Moses, I come not to destroy, but to uphold".The Christians of today deny any allegiance or affiliation with Islam. THEY have broken their covenants of old with Islam, yet we strive still to uphold our end of the agreements. They judge us on the actions of a few, while a minority in their own midst blow up abortion clinics, but they do not hold themselves accountable for the actions of those few, while they hold EVERY MUSLIM accountable for the actions of a Muslim minority. So how does this agreement relate to these people who now call themselves "Christians"?

I think, as with the 'Charter of Privileges to the monks of St. Catherine Monastery in Mt.Sinai.', this is testament to the noble and beautiful character of our beloved Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings of God be upon him صلى الله عليه و سلم ).
I can't speak for Muslims in the current climate, and also people of other beliefs. My hope is that all Muslims will simplify their lives and needs, not cave in to the whims of the ego, unite and not divide based on notions of 'sect' or other bases for division, and look into their heart always and show mercy and kindness as Islam is based on. We can be optimistic for the Ummah. Inshallah I hope that Muslims everywhere will remember Islam is the path of the heart and every verse of the Qur'an but one begins with بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم
... 'In the name of Allah, the most beneficient, the most merciful' thus showing us how we are to be merciful ourselves. Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings of God be upon him صلى الله عليه و سلم ) was sent as a mercy to all mankind.
"Verily in this (Qur'an) is a Message for people who would (truly) worship Allah. We sent thee not, but as a Mercy for all creatures." [Qur'an 106-107]
I didn't know about this one brother, thanks for sharing :)
Salam.

Paul’s words make it clear that there are true “inspired expressions” and false ones. He refers to both kinds at 1 Timothy 4:1 when saying that “the inspired utterance [from God’s holy spirit] says definitely that in later periods of time some will fall away from the faith, paying attention to misleading inspired utterances and teachings of demons.” This identifies the source of the false “inspired utterances” as the demons.
