If the horse is healthy, there is no reason why you can't do this. Take it SLOW and EASY. Get her used to a bit and make her bridle-wise from the ground. Please don't "cowboy" her. Lead her around with a saddle on her. When you see it doesn't bother her, lean over the saddle. When that doesn't bother her, get on and have someone lead you for a while.

    Best wishes. Enjoy your horse.

Seventeen is NOT an OLD horse. I see many horses show until they are 25 years old. Just take it easy so she will not make any habits that you don't want her to have. Do NOT ride her hard at first. Do short lessons and lengthen them a little every few days to condition her, especially in extreme weather conditions.

It depends on how long and how often you ride her in the arena. My pony Chilli got paddock sour and started rearing and bucking. But when I rode him on a trail ride he was perfect never blinked an eye at anything. My grandma's horse Flicka started doing massive bucking fits like a bronco because her teeth were hurting her. But you say the vet came so it can't be that. Maybe she's bored of going in the arena or maybe she's bored if you do the same routine over and over again??? If I were you then I would try taking her to a different arena or different places. You might also be afraid and expecting her to buck. If your afraid then the horse will be afraid and start to act up. Even if you are afraid don't act afraid and try to do everything as usual as if nothing was wrong. Her saddle might also be hurting her if you put it in the wrong position or its to small for her and therefore pinching her back when you sit on her. When I stopped acting afraid of Chilli then he was old Chilli again and I had no fear of him. I think you should change your routine and then check if your putting the saddle on her correctly. Also if her behaviour continues call a saddle specialist and ask then to check her while she's tacked up. Also if you lunge her it will bend her back. Talk to Monty Roberts. Hope this helped :)

It would not be impossible to break a 14 year old, but you are introducing new challenges because of the age. You should not do this yourself. Contact a professional trainer, and with a few months work you will likely have a great saddle horse!

Never to old but may take alot of time and patience. There are wild horses still caught today that are sold at auctions as old if not older then the horse your getting that end up being great pleasure horses. Make sure a vet checks this horse to make sure she's healthy before attempting anything with her.

No it is not to old to for her to start under saddle. It is just like teaching a 14 year old horse to do anything new. This is just something new. It actually is just like any other age...takes lots of patience, and perseverance. But it won't hurt her in anyway and she is not too old.

I started training my husbands horse to saddle (who had never been riden) when he was 12. And he is just fantastic!!

Good luck with the journey and enjoy your new horse.

Horses are never too old to break to ride. It will just take longer because she is older and more set in her ways. You will have to be more patient with her as she will be more resistant to change and learning new things. But if you are consistent with her training she will be able to be ridden.

she isnt to old to break. at the rannch i work at we have horses in there 20's some just now being truly broken. or are still in there training. you just have to be more repetative with a older horse then a younger, because she's had so many years not worring about people on her back. though she (or he) may look forward to some work. but no it isnt to old in the least.

yea tts too old for a horse to be broke. Their brains are not as stimulative as younger horses, so it is harder to train them. It will be harder to train an older horse because they would get more frustrated and what not because they have never done anything like that in their life. If u wanna train a horse train it when its little =]

I don't see why you couldn't break it - Might take a little more attention and dedication to change it's ways!

I dont see why you couldnt do it, as long as the horse is healthy.
