How do you replace one broken tile on a bathroom wall?

This tile looks to have been a soap holder that broke off - now I have this black tile with a big piece broken off. The tile work was probably done in the 1950's. Is there any way to remove that one tile and replace it?? IF so, how would I go about doing that?

Thanks -

I've got tile from the '50s. They don't make the same size anymore... however, I've checked my 'stash'... I've got one regular, one bullnose. $5 for my trouble +shipping and you've got them.

clamshell @ hotmail dot com and they're yours. Put TILE in the subject so I notice it and don't delete it.

Gotta do it soon... I go back to FL before Labor Day.

scrape the old grout from around the tile then take a hammer and tap on the tile until it breaks , but be careful because it is very sharp like glass. get some adhesive put it on the back of the new tile and apply the tile to the wall.let the adhesive dry over night and then apply the grout in the groves ,but do not let the grout dry on the tile itself, wipe it off with a wet sponge.you will have a haze on the tile which you can simply wipe off with an old rag.

there is a tool that you can buy to scrape out the grout as mgnlok said. but make sure you scrap out the grout deep around the tile. the way that tile was put in back then is different from now.don't pry against the tiles surrounding the broken one or you may crack them. good luck and be carful or yoou may wind up trying to replace one and end up replacing all of them because of cracking more. the tool you can get it at a hardware store or home depot or lowes.

  • Just take that one tile off and replace it with an identical one. All you need if like grout i think. If you can't find a tile that looks the same then just paint a regular white one. Good as new!
