I've been trying to determine which rate I want in the Navy?

I'm leaving for the Navy in about 6 months, and I've been spending a lot of time deciding which rate I want. The one I think I'd enjoy the most is becoming a Cook. Any information on the population (is it an over populated rate?) of this rate will be thanked. And if anyone has served their country by preparing food, your testimony would be thanked.

If you become a Culinary specialist, don't get stuck on an aircraft carrier. Although i'm a retired AO, a CS has many friends and it will lead you to a career worth will if you take advantage of all thats giving to you, most cooks that work for the president have served in the United States Navy. Have you thought about going to a culinary school before you join the navy, i know that the best school is in san francisco. but it seems to late for you. do your thing,..GOOOOOOOO Navy.

cooking in the military is not fun, you don't get weekends or holidays off, like the rest of us do. You also have to do field exercises with the unit your attached too as well, I'm not sure how that works in the Navy but I know in the Army it sucked for the cooks.

That being said, being a cook in the military will help you get a great cooking job once you get out. Also the higher ranked cooks compeat in military compitions against other branches and guest civilian chefs I saw it on Food Network a few times it's cool.

So bottom line if it's what you want go for it, just be sure to get a good bonus for it too!

There are two major things you might want to consider - initially, it is all going to be about the military and duty, and then, everything will depend on what kind of command you are going to get orders to. For example, lots of squadrons that do not deploy on regular basis use the CSs (Culinary Specialists) as barracks support and such.

The manning is changing all the time, and the expected levels and advancement opportunities are published annually, in a so called CREO message. Please look at the link and it will probably make more sense.

I recommend to go to Military.com and read the forum - there is a lot of info, quite useful.

    Good luck!

cooks work in shifts in the navy. underway four meals are prepared, breakfast, lunch, dinner and mid-rats, usually served starting around 2330. you will almost never work more than a 10 hour shift in a 24 hour period. if your really good you'll get to cook for the wardroom (officers). underway you work the same hours as everyone else for the most part.

p.s. you will never not be invited to those underway payday stakes poker games either...just bring the keys to the pantry!

you are able to exchange your jobs, it is not comparable to you have signed a settlement with that express pastime slot. exchange your pastime checklist to a minimum of a few thing you prefer and your recruiter will deliver it to meps and whilst any of those pastime slots exchange into open you will get those rather. the quicker you % and alter your checklist the extra effective through fact if that pastime SEAMAN %. comes up and is on your checklist you're able to take it in the different case hazard being kicked out of the DEP.

No matter what rate you choose...you won't get any sleep...so you might as well eat good...besides unless you got it in writing as to which rate you would like...the navy will put you you are probably least suited for...go figure...military intelligence...?
