Do you consider Ohio a midwestern state?
I have heard Ohio, Illinois, and Indiana called midwestern too. They can't be! They are east of the Mississippi River, therefore they are "out east" Minnesota is "up north" as it borders on Canada. It isn't midwestern like a lot of news reporters have been sating after the bridge colapse. Do you agree?

Prior to the Revolution they WERE the west, along with Alabama and Mississippi. The nation moved west and west moved further. The "Midwest" is a fiction. In a lot of respects everything between West Virginia and Nevada could be counted as Mid-west. I consider Ohio the NORTH (damned Yankees)LOL. Where does the Mid-west finally give way to the west? I have heard Kansas and Nebraska called Mid-west, but many of my friends from there and from Oklahoma, and even Arkansas consider them selves as being from the WEST. I figgure the press always get it wrong. . .I once heard a national anchor refer to Charleston North Carolina, for Pete's sake. If you live somewhere, you are entitled to call yourself anything you want. If you are in the press, just refer to the state and leave the "region" out of the statement.

Yes and No. Ohio is about as Midwestern as you can get culturally, just like Illinois and Indiana. If you put in too many categories, it will just confuse people. I live in New Jersey, which is a Mid-Altantic state. What's that? Or maybe it's just in the Northeast. Or maybe it's a well disguised portal to another planet.
Source(s): I lived in Ohio twice in my life for brief periods of time. - Anonymous1 decade ago
They are called mid-western states because the original western board of the United States after the American Revoluation was the Mississippi River. As the nation grew with the Lousiana Purchase they became the "middle of the west" and "midway to the west." See the wikipedia article for more of a discussion on this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mid-west So I don't agree with you that it is not a mid-western state - it most certainly is by the historic definition.
Good Luck!!!

As an Ohioan, born and bred, I can say that when I tell people where in the U.S. I live....I say *Midwest*.......now you're right about the three states being East of the Mississippi River....but Ohio is about as *Midwest* as one can get.
I have a very good friend that lives in Minneapolis, Minnesota and she and I were discussing this just the other day....she said she is Midwest, moreso than me.....but the very first comment she made when she came here was *omg, Ohio is soooo Midwest*....
To me, Eastern U.S. is New York, New England, Maine, Vermont, etc......Ohio is Midwest :)
