what does x equal?

If x varies directly as y, x=56 when y=8, find x when y=10.

    Direct variation is y=kx, where k is the constant of variation. You're given x and y, so lets find k.

    8=56k

    1/7=k

    Now plug in the other y and k and solve for x

    10=x/7

    70=x

    When x=70, y=10

    If x varies directly as y, x=ky

    56=k(8)

    k=7

    so, x=7y

    when y=10 , x=7(10)=70
