Very lightly. On your other question a few hours ago, someone said that the McCanns and the abductor were equally bad, for heaven's sake.

Given that the police have stated that the McCanns are not suspects - and I think this means what it sounds like - it is perverse to equate the actions of parents who intended to keep their children safe but made an error of judgement with those of someone who set out to commit a criminal act - an act the nature of which we do not yet know.

In fact, that comment is far from the worst that has been made on this area of the story because I've read a few posts that have said with varying degrees of directness that have suggested that Madeleine must be better off where she is because she is not with her "bad", "neglectful", "arrogant", "uncaring", "terrible" parents.

It's easier to blame the parents because we know who they are. We have no idea who the kidnapper is at this point. Leaving your child unattended is easier to explain than someone who would steal and harm an innocent child. Neglect is relatable; the psychosis involved with kidnapping is not.

And the fact that they are often repeat offenders who have been released from prison, back into the community.
