Is it bad to turn my computer on and off several times a day?
I usually turn my pc on and off in the morning before I leave for work, then again during lunchbreak and in the evening. Will it harm my pc? I heard that it's better to keep it on standy the whole day but I am concerned about electric consumption. I would appreciate your answers. Thanks.
I am running on XP.

Are you running Windows? If so, what version? (95, 98, NT, Me, 2000, XP, Vista) I will help you once you tell me what version.
Okay. Well, you have a couple options. Depending on your computer's hardware, you may be able to use the Standby feature. I noticed you already talked about that. It's nice....but all it does is turn off your monitor, and that can waste a lot of electricity.
I recommend the Hibernate feature. This started in Windows 2000. What it does is it saves your current session to the hard disk drive and turns off the computer without logging you off. To do it: Start>Turn off. Hold the shift key and Standby will change to Hibernate. Your computer appears to be completely off. To turn the computer on, you just press the button on the mid-tower like you would to normally boot up the computer. You will see a black screen with a bar and the text "Resuming Windows..." above it. When that's done it just brings up the desktop. It's much faster than Shutting down and restarting 3 times a day. However, at the end of the day, you should shut down the computer normally because it's not good to just do Hibernate all the time.
If this doesn't work, Hibernate may need to be turned on. To do this: Start>Control Panel. (Make sure you are viewing Control Panel in classic mode. There is a little link the top on the left side.) Double-click Power Options. On the Hibernate tab click Enable hibernation. Then OK and so forth.
I use this option often on my XP desktop because it is REALLY slow at booting up.

actual it is fit to coach the computing gadget off whilst no longer utilising it over sleep/standby modes! the reason being the workstation creates a picture in the RAM and/or saves it to the troublesome force. this would not enable the RAM to sparkling itself. A nicely geared up workstation could be restarted each (sort of) 24 hours to function at its applicable. stable answer Techxan! want i could thumbs up you! :(

I have sleep mode on my computer, but it will shut down at various times during the day and night when I use that feature. I then have to reboot
