Average time it takes to get pregnant with irregular periods?

To start off with, I am happily married (2 year anniversary was last week) and will graduate from college next May. I stopped taking birth control this past April, because I was very unhappy with the side effects (depression, anxiety, etc.). While I am not necessarily wanting to get pregnant right away, I wouldn't mind if I did get pregnant within the next few months. I have had irregular periods that were extremely light, almost like spotting, my entire "adult" life, starting when I was almost 15 (I was fully developed by 9 or 10) until I started the pill. While on the pill, I was completely regular. Since going off the pill, I have had one period, about 2 months after I stopped the pills.

Which brings me to my question: Does anyone know the average amount of time it takes for someone with irregular periods for no known reason with no obvious hormone imbalances to get pregnant? Is this something that is going to take a long time for me? I appreciate any input!

Have you ever been to the doctor and had a blood test? Do you know for sure that you have hormone imbalances because of a blood test or are you just diagnosing yourself? If you havent been to the doctor, than you need to go and talk to him.

Hi there. My situation is a lot like yours. I have been irregular since the beginning of my cylces ie: 4 periods a year. I have been on birth control, which regulated me, but being off of it, I am always irregular. I will say this. The first two years my husband an I were married, we weren't trying for kids. We used protection most of the time. Sometimes we were lazy and didn't which always made me wonder if I could get pregnant because I was so irregular. After those two years we weren't trying to concieve, but we weren't preventing either. I got pregnant right away. After having my first child, I went on BC for about 1 year. After stopping bc, I was irregular again. I got pregnant again 2 months later. We weren't trying either. Now, I am thinking of having a third child and I still am concerned about my irregular cycles. I have no health problems or hormonal imbalances. I just finished the book 'Taking Charge of Your Fertility' by Toni Weischler and I have to say that it's a miracle that I have concieved 2 times before, because it is such a short time period in your cycle that you can actually get pregnant, that is if you even ovulate. This book helps you pick up on the signs that you are ovulating. There are a few signs to look for. So I think that once you recognize when you ovulate, you can acheive pregnancy the first time you recognoze it. This book will give you a lot of info that will help you know understand what the heck is going on with your reproductive system. I hope this helps. It sure has helped me. Good luck:o)

If youre wanting to get pregnant, try some ovulation strips and start doing some research over how your body works.

Ovulation strips are super cheap, just take 1 every day until you get a positive and then 24 hours after that have sex! http://www.babywishes.org/

Ive had irregular periods my whole life also, and I was diagnosed with PCOS. Maybe you should look that up and see if you have some of the symptoms. The biggest symptom of PCOS is irregular periods, and its a very common reason many women are infertile these days.

Don't get discouraged if you do have PCOS, there are many inexpensive treatments to cure the infertility, but you'd have to live with all the rest of the symptoms for the rest of your life.

Since you havent been trying very long, for now just get some ovulation strips and see if it's just your timing that's off. If that doesnt work within 6 months, go see a doctor and get yourself and your hubby checked out

P.S. my friends were married for 3 years without her being on birth control, they weren't really *trying* for a baby but it took her 3 years to get pregnant. If she would have used ovulation strips Im sure it would have been sooner!

They say that a "normal" couple will get pregnant within 1 year of actual trying (using ovulation strips, timing, bbt, etc.)

I don't really know if my answer is what you're looking for, I have irregular periods and have had them since I was 17ish. I've been with my husband since I was 15, we've pretty much had unprotected sex from the age of 16. I got pregnant with my son when I was 19 and exactly a year later got pregnant again. Never had a period in between both my boys. I am still waiting on my period and my 2nd son is almost a year. M doctor has ran so many tests and says I'm fine. But I'm just hoping when we do decide to have another, my period issues will not interfere. Good luck! :::BABY DUST::: :o)

Well girl friend, I'm in the same boat as you. Recently married, well two years, and am planning on getting preganant. I have ALWAYS had light periods usually two days with some spotting, which has always worried me. I have been off birth control for 16 months and I have not conceived so far. I am starting clomid next month. My doctor said my period is just "normal for me" although I don't by it. It is going to take a while, up to a year, to regulate your cycle after using birth control so if you are wanting to wait, just let your body "air out" and use condoms. Do not use the patch or depo shot I can tell you that. It will mess you all up like it did me. I have "unexplained infertility" fertility now. Personally I would wait till you finish school and then have at it. Good luck to you and me both.

I have a similar situation as you. I stopped the pill in feb '06 b/c I knew we were going to start trying to get prego this year and wanted to regulate my period. Well I only had about 4 periods in a year time frame. then I went 6 months without having any sort of sign of a period so I went to my OBGYN and she did blood work and an ultra sound on me. Everything came back normal but I just don't get my cycle or ovulate on my own. So she put me on prover to start a cycle and then Clomid to make me ovulate. I'm on my second round of clomid now.

I woud go see your OB at least a few months before you and hubby start trying to conceive so you can have test done and talk to your dr. about what to do. also buying the ovulation stripes are very helpful.

I would defiantly recommend getting this book called "Taking charge of your fertility" By Toni W. she goes over everything in that book how to read your body and the signs to look for when you ovulate. I learned a lot about my fertility by reading that book and still go back to reread sections of the book. I found it on ebay new/used for $8. you can also check out amazon.

Now everyone can cure infertility using this natural remedy http://pregnancyhelps.info/

infertility can run in the family and one of the first things the doctor asks you when you go to a fertility clinic is your family history regarding cases of infertility or other reproductive issues.

If infertility is caused by genetic disorder then it's not unusual that one of the kids (your mom) doesn't have it and another does (your aunt).

two months of trying is still to early to be concerned about the fact that you might be infertile and it's also quite early to go to a fertility specialist. Go to a regular Obgyb to get a closer insight and see what ways there are are to improve your fertility rate.

Also remove alcohol, caffeine and cigarettes from your life because they might influence your chances too. Stress is also a risk factor when it comes to infertility.

after being on the pill it will take your body time to recover and bacically tell your body that the egg is ok to be fertalised when you decide that you are commited to having a baby buy a ovulation test kit as it is the best time to fall pregnant as it has the highest percentage of success but it may take a while just dont get upset if it doesnt work for a while you could just set yourself back if you do. good luck
