Is the band "Switchfoot" a Christian band?
I've been trying to figure it out for a while since I love their music. Most of it sounds like it is teaching us about the Lord. But others don't. Why is that?

The guys of Switchfoot are Christian, but they don't like to be called a Christian band.
Tim Foreman (the bassist) said: "As a band, we're Christians by faith and not in the genre, and I think people have a hard time differentiating between the two. There is a genre that exists called Christian music and to not be part of that is not to say you're not a Christian."
Although I can't find a quote, they also said that genres are like a cage. They don't want to be called a Christian band because they don't want to exclude other people.
Hope that helps.

A Christian band for my area is a band that does extra desirable than sing songs that are in basic terms inspirational and seem approximately God yet might nicely be wrong for non-Christian songs by ability of people who don't understand that they seem to be a Christian band. a actual Christian band performs songs relating to the Gospel and their music consists of the pressing final days message of the Gospel of repentance they are actually not afraid to offend human beings by their Biblical lyrics and that they do no longer care approximately getting Grammy nominations because of fact they seek for the compliment of God and not that of guy!

They are.

They actually DON'T claim to be, contrary to what most people say. Switchfoot refers to themself as alternative rock because "christian rock" carries a stereotype that draws people away.

They are featured a lot on Christian Radio. Also if you'll check out http://www.tvulive.com/ you'll be able to see all kinds of Christian rock bands, Switchfoot is among them.
Good question though.

I would say if you have to ask then then they probably are not. I listen to Christian radio stations everyday and have never once heard a Switchfoot song.

Many of their songs mention God in them, but many don't. They are Christians in a Band but im not completely sure if they are a Christian band.

"Yeah, we always grew up playing in clubs and bars and churches. I guess for us we didn’t realize that there was a Christian music industry per se. So after we got signed, when you go to Nashville, you realize that it’s one or the other type of mindset that a lot of people have. I don’t know that we’ve ever had that mindset. We play music for everyone. I think that it’s a very dangerous thing to stamp something with the name of Christ and say this is sanctioned by Christ himself, by calling it Christian. I think for us as a band we’ve never done that with our music. If other people have said we’re a Christian band, hopefully it’s by the way that we’re treating each other and feeding the homeless, that type of thing than anything that would be done on stage. The point is, it’s a lot easier to say something on stage than to live it out. And for us that’s the challenge, trying to do both. Not only just talk about it but do it." - Jon Foreman

To be honest, this question grieves me because I feel that it represents a much bigger issue than simply a couple SF tunes. In true Socratic form, let me ask you a few questions:
Does Lewis or Tolkien mention Christ in any of their fictional series?
Are Bach's sonata's Christian?
What is more Christ-like, feeding the poor, making furniture, cleaning bathrooms, or painting a sunset?
There is a schism between the sacred and the secular in all of our modern minds. The view that a pastor is more Christian than a girls volleyball coach is flawed and heretical. The stance that a worship leader is more spiritual than a janitor is condescending and flawed. These different callings and purposes further demonstrate Gods sovereignty. Many songs are worthy of being written. Switchfoot will write some, Keith Green, Bach, and perhaps yourself have written others. Some of these songs are about redemption, others about the sunrise, others about nothing in particular: written for the simple joy of music. None of these songs has been born again, and to that end there is no such thing as Christian music.
No. Christ didnt come and die for my songs, he came for me. Yes. My songs are a part of my life. But judging from scripture I can only conclude that our God is much more interested in how I treat the poor and the broken and the hungry than the personal pronouns I use when I sing. I am a believer. Many of these songs talk about this belief. An obligation to say this or do that does not sound like the glorious freedom that Christ died to afford me. I do have an obligation, however, a debt that cannot be settled by my lyrical decisions
My life will be judged by my obedience not my ability to confine my lyrics to this box or that. We all have a different calling; Switchfoot is trying to be obedient to who we are called to be. Were not trying to be Audio A or U2 or POD or Bach: were trying to be Switchfoot. You see, a song that has the words: Jesus Christ is no more or less Christian than an instrumental piece. (I've heard lot's of people say jesus christ and they weren't talking about their redeemer.) You see, Jesus didnt die for any of my tunes. So there is no hierarchy of life or songs or occupation only obedience.
We have a call to take up our cross and follow. We can be sure that these roads will be different for all of us. Just as you have one body and every part has a different function, so in Christ we who are many form one body and each of us belongs to all the others. Please be slow to judge brothers who have a different calling and thank you for reading." -Jon Foreman

"Tim Foreman from Switchfoot said that his band is, "Christian by faith, not by genre."
Jon Foreman said, "I have never used my music to sell my faith, and i have never used my faith to sell my music. we have always tried to define our music outside of genres. what is a genre? genre is a cage or a box and for us our music is better with fangs and some claws and running free in the wild." if you want to hear more about this interview click on this website: http://music.aol.com/video/exclusive-int...

Although they are Christians, they dont want to be classified as a Christian band becuase if a person that isnt a christian sees their album in the Christian section they wont even dare go over there to see there music. But once they get their CD and start listening to it they realize the true meanings of their songs!
I ♥ Switchfoot!
"I feel like people want us to be flying their flag. People will use our words to prove them right. We are not trying to fly the flag of Christendom, and we never have attempted to lift that flag. At the end of my life, I would love to have somebody say, "He was a humble Christian." I think that would be the biggest compliment.
I've seen very few people get up on stage in rock and roll who yell and stamp their feet for the name of Christ and do it in a way that I feel like is the gospel. So when people come to us with books and microphones and cameras and they want us to cheer the cheer and chant the chant, it's something that I don't feel comfortable doing. In all honesty, I don't feel like that's the gospel. And to do so is to betray the very thing that means the most to me.
If people are going to misconstrue that as being an unbeliever, then I have to be comfortable with that outcome, because I can't be responsible for other people's opinions. Again, you can't live your life for a million people. The whole audience of One is a really liberating concept."
