Stayed in Waikiki?

Going there in October. What are some good, "local," ie, non-touristy, places to eat, drink, listen to music with our 16 year old son. Also looking for suggestions for inexpensive but fun activities. Pretty open-ended question....ideas?

Thanks, in advance!

P.S.: We won't be renting a car.

Since you won't be renting a car, invest in a four day Discovery TheBus pass. Each one is 20.00 but it is for four consecutive days that you can get on and off any of the Thebus busses.

Well, Duke's is "touristy", so is Cheeseburger in Paradise, but they both have good food at these places. Cheeseburger in Paradise is across the street from Waikiki Beach, so you can view the sunsets and maybe see some people surfing.

Seaside Bar and Grill has B,L,D specials all the time (there is no music there), and the ambiance is really good.

    Inexpensive activities:

Hike Diamond Head (make sure you are in a hiking mood, and have some water with you and a flashlight)

Snorkel at Hanauma Bay (not that expensive)

Go on TheBus for a Circle Island Tour (you ride around the island and you can get on and off any TheBus after you take your pictures) it costs less than if you paid to go on a Tour Bus.

    Arizona Memorial/Pearl Harbor (free)

Go walking down Kalakaua Ave and watch the street performers. It is a delight (they have a person dressed all in newspaper, one all in silver, one in gold, etc.... fun to watch them. You think they are statues, and then they start moving! Pretty cool!

    Swim in the ocean!

You don't need a car in Waikiki and you can go around the island on the bus. I think that the Polynesian Cultural Centre is well worth the money (not sure what it costs now) It is a day outing and your really get a good taste of the Polynesian culture and music. Waikiki is pretty touristy so most things to do there are geared for tourists Have you considered renting a vacation rental, and then you can save money by cooking your own meals. It you go to another side of the island away from Waikiki you can also find some nice vacation rentals and you get away from Honazoolu (as we call it)

There may be at least one in Waikiki on this site.

The Yummy Korean BBQ in the International Marketplace in the heart of Waikiki. The food is inexpensive and delicious. Also, believe it or not, the food court at Ala Moana Mall is really good. They offer a lot of choices that aren't available in the mainland. Also Keo's in Waikiki has the best red curry I've ever eaten. I wouldn't hesitate to get a quick bite to eat at one of the one thousand ABC stores in Waikiki. You can get fresh musubi, octopus flavored chips, and fancy Japanese sodas. If you want non-touristy activities you have to get out of Waikiki. I suggest renting a car or a jeep, just for the day, and seeing Kailua. Kailua, on the Northeast side of the island, offers beautiful beaches and Boston Pizza (great Boston style pizza handmade by authentic Bostonians). Have fun. Hawaii is paradise.
