Do you keep in touch with your redneck relatives?
...or do you have less and less contact with them over time?
Ha - well yes there is the rub. What IS a redneck. Lovely country folk, salt of the earth as someone said - well we all need more contact with those folk. Redneck to me means:
-Wife beater
-Wife who returns to the beater again n again
-Drunk
-Racist
-Stupid
-Adopt (or foster care) kids although you hate kids
-Hate to read
-Rather watch the WWF, maybe a season pass
-Pregnant at 15 like all your sisters and cousins.
-In and out of jail
-Tries to cheat workman's compensation and unemployment benefits
..you get the idea

No I don't but really they are not bad people. One really nice thing I can say about them is that they know many black people, neighbors, local business owners, and friends and such and even though they were raised in racist Oklahoma just knowing black people has made them quite reasonable in their views concerning people they have met or know by name or see around frequently. One thing they do though is to speak in generalities about black people they don't know or have never met, say someone they read about in the paper who has been accused of a crime. They never say the really bad stuff such as you read in this forum, nothing like that. These relatives are pretty old bunch born in the 30s and 40s. I have known many people over the years who think of them selves as liberal but have never really known black people and they have some impressions (some overtly racist) that some redneck types do not. Some elder rednecks who were raised with black people are pretty down to earth and accepting. What I can't take is the professional wresting, TV Evangalists, Fox News and NASCAR that's always on the television. They listen to old country not new so I can tolerate that now but not when I was a kid.
