At the very least it would be a manslaughter charge with the added circumstance with an officer on duty being the victim.
It SHOULD constitute a negligent act resulting in death of a fellow officer.
However that "cop" may get off on an animal cruelty charge.
Doesn't that suck the big one?

I would hope he would be punished just like a citizen would be. Cops aren't above the law.
I hope the 'good ol' boy' mentality doesn't kick in. There would be outrage if a citizen did this. Where's the outrage from other cops?
If a citizen did it, he'd be in jail. Since the cop still has his job and has not been charged, then it seems to me cops have a free ride in this country. And people wonder why some aren't fond of cops.

I would hope he faces criminal charges, unless there are hard-to-imagine extenuating circumstances... and even then, it would only be the difference between murder and manslaughter. In animal rights terms, I mean.

I think he will be prosecuted just like a civilian who left his or her dog in a hot car. That is so cruel...even when it is unintentional.
